I don't think I will sleep well tonight...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's almost 2AM. At 2PM I have my first appointment with the psychiatrist who'll try to determine whether or not I have Asperger's. I'm scared as fuck. And I haven't told anyone yet. Feels like the next 12 hours are going to be really unpleasant...

You're still the same person whether or not you have Asperger's.

SA!

But, I hope it goes over well. Might sleeping pills help?

Scared of what? You are who you are. Tomorrow you will still be you. Remember that above all else.

I can see why that would be nerve-wracking. I hope everything goes well for you.

I understand why you're scared. This is a big thing, and I hope you come out of it with some knowledge and understanding.

I'll be thinking of you, anon.

if you have Asperger's, you'll finally have tools to handle that and improve your life, and if you don't, chances are that those tools would help you anyway!

don't beat yourself up, whatever the diagnosis is, you are still you and you'll at least walk away understanding yourself a little bit more

I hope you sleep, anon! Maybe you should try to read or watch something that relaxes you (or that you think will keep your mind off things), so that in a bit you might have a better chance at sleeping?

Hope everything goes well, but Asperger's or not you're still the same person. No matter what the psychiatrist might be able to help with things, so take heart! Some good might come from this.

Good luck!

Maybe make your self some camomile tea or milk with honey? That helps me. (Having a piece of toast might also help. Carbs make you tired.) Also I'll take melatonin on bad sleepless day to calm my mind down.

I hope your appointment goes well anon and no matter what, you are you. Nothing can change that.

You're the same person now as you will be in twelve hours - the only difference is that you may have a label to explain certain things. Trust me, getting a diagnosis is actually a pretty good thing - it's a way to go, "Oh, hey, I'm NOT a completely asocial maladjusted freak!", which is essentially how I saw myself throughout my entire childhood and adolescence.

Getting a diagnosis doesn't solve every problem, but it does let you know that you're not actually alone, that there are other people going through the same thing.

Maybe they're scared they WON'T get the diagnosis...

...Oh, true...

This is one reason my partner is terrified of therapy or even seeing doctors in general - he'd be fucking ecstatic to be told something was wrong and there's a reason for the problems he has, but being told that there's nothing wrong and he's just lazy and/or making it all up for attention? That would crush him. He's so scared of that possibility, however irrational it is, that even if he wasn't terrified of interacting with strangers in general or talking about himself, he'd still have a ridiculous time trying to bring himself to go. It's easier to live with, "maybe I really do have these issues," than, "the doctors say I'm completely healthy." A clean bill of health is only a good thing for somebody who feels healthy. For somebody who feels sick...it's awful. You don't want to be told that nothing is wrong when you know that something is.

OP here. Yes. What if in fact I don't have Asperger's? What if I can't be helped after all?

I hope they're able to help you, regardless of the test results.

Echoing all the people who have said: this will help you understand yourself better and understand what kind of help you need. Whatever the diagnosis, you will still be yourself! Don't be ashamed. It won't make you any better or worse of a person, any greater or lesser, or any more or less valuable.

I hope things go well for you either way. ♥
