Got no official stats, but 92 pages of 'Final Fantasy VII' fic on A03, which brings up a lot of fic that also has the 'Compilation of FFVII' tag, vs 121 pages of 'Compilation' tag, yeah, I'd say people are willing to work with what they've got.

I think you're missing out, personally. There's a certain tint of rose people have had on looking back at the original game. In the couple of years immediately after its release, the fandom was a mess. Everybody was confused about who or what Cloud was, who this mythical Zack person was, if Vincent was dead, undead or just wounded, if Sephiroth was a clone, a mutated chunk of Jenova, what exactly that thing in the crater was and why he had no legs...

By the time the Compilation came out, word had gotten around, all the game secrets had been exposed, and those still in the fandom had gotten all the original game confusion sorted out long enough to forget how beautifully flawed it had been. Compilation lives exactly up to its legacy, IMO. Fun, with depth if you're inclined to look for it or make your own, and big fat holes and dots that need connecting for speculation and fix-it fic contentment.

for all the many, many flaws of the compilation, it did expand the world, trying to fix plot holes (and creating new ones! yay! :V)

and also if you have a PSP go get Crisis Core my goodness, I would buy it in a heartbeat if I had the money for it and a system to play it on

it shows a more human side of Sephiroth and reminded many fanfic writers that Aerith/Aeris did in fact have a playful side to her and wasn't some sort of perfect martyr

also Zack Fair rocks

BAH I hated Crisis Core. I found Zack unbelievably naive (he had the moral maturity of an eight year old) and generally stupid, considering he is in the corrupted Shinra's elite military force. I don't mind the fact that Shinra is given some shades of gray - and it's nice, in theory, to have some shades to Sephiroth, too, but wtf was up with Gackt, I mean, Genesis, and Angeal (I'm a monster, I have an angel wing!!! omg stahp). One of the worst offenses, though, was that Turk girl, Miss Stars and Giggles, I don't remember her name because I've successfully repressed it, why is a fucking murdering assassin secret agent this monstrosity?

And Aeris is my favorite, but I actually didn't like how she was portrayed. Sure, she had a bit of a playful side, and some cute lines, but I just couldn't with the "I'm afraid of the sky!" *meek head bow* crap. And the angel symbolism, enough with the angels! I'd rather have seen Aeris dodging guards and being spunky and mischievous like she is in the original. Plus, the game was missing some much needed Tseng/Aeris sexual tension.

There were a couple okay parts in it, but overall, no thank you.

okay, fair enough

her name was , if you want to undo your hard work suppressing it :V (I though the cuteness and giggles were just an act?)

same anon

also, maybe this was Aeris before life in Midgar really got her? like, once Zack didn't come back, she was all like, fuck it, I'm gonna enjoy life, fuck the haters and became the spunky sassy doesn't take no for an answer awesome lady we all know and love? c:

Noooooo I ended up highlighting the name, dammit! lol

I've heard that theory in regards to Aeris, too, after all it was what, five years in the past, she was young, and had a lot to be scared about. I think for me it's just a bad case of "this isn't how I imagined it", mostly. :-/ It always seemed to me like a girl who grew up in the slums, dodging capture from Shinra, etc., would learn to be tough pretty early on. I was even hoping she might get to wear pants in a prequel, like they'd do something totally surprising with her character, take a different angle, but oh well.

I'm just not gonna win with this Compilation! Hahaha. But yeahh either way the spunky, sassy fearless Aeris in FFVII is the best kind of Aeris. :D

...OTL I'm so sorry

to be honest, Crisis Core's interpretation of pre-FF7 Aeris wasn't what I was expecting either (I was expecting something more along the lines you said, actually)

the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is a losing game for everyone. OTL for everyone

i want more videogame female characters like Aeris :( girls who don't give a fuck what people think and who are comfortable with their sexuality (remember her flirting with Cloud when they met? and then making him wear a dress? ah, good times), with their capabilities and who know their limits but don't let them hold them back and who want to take action to make the world a better place c:

Agreed, agreed! Aeris is just so awesome in the original game. I love how flirty and playful she is, mischievous and sassy, and so assertive and generally fearless, while still being sincere and kind. And of course she has flaws, too, and isn't always perfect - so when she's portrayed as a sweet innocent angel, I just feel like people forget who she really was in the game. I actually love all the characters in the game, but Aeris to me was just so amazing. *_* Aside from horrible voice acting, I thought she was okay in AC and KH, it was just that we didn't really see her sassy side, and that's my favorite part of her so... >

yesss

that was exactly it; her character was incomplete in AC and KH

People liking something doesn't make it good, hence the ol' Twilight conundrum. Obviously, people are free to like what they want, power to them if they enjoy it, but I find the new installments, without exception, completely cheese, retconning, graphics over substance, bad dialogue, and generally ruining the awesome characters and world of the original game.

I actually was in the fandom when the original game was fairly new, before the Compilation (the glory days, as I like to call them). FFVII's plot holes were half its charm - I like the "less is more" style, the hints that never become anything, and the ending where everyone very well could have died, with humanity being wiped out. Some of those questions are answered in the original game, actually, the amazing part of it is that the basic plot is simple and understandable, the details are confusing but not frustrating, and playing it a few times can make the picture clearer but everything would never be answered. The characters were strong, multi-dimensional, and the world was more or less matured. Does the game have flaws? Sure... I suppose, but I don't consider those plot holes to be flaws, I like that balance.

I actually have played/watched the spinoffs, and I disagree - filling in plotholes is a delicate thing to try, but they stuffed 'em full of concrete. They are cheesy with subpar dialogue and forced angst, I couldn't stand all the retconning or how things were changed, and the focus of the games was each basically a circle wank over some male protagonist - AC, Cloud, CC - Zack (ugh fuck Zack so much, I cannot be the only one out there who hated him in that game with the whole "you are my living legacy, bawww," and puppy bullshit), Dirge - Vincent, and so on.

Anyway, I don't mean to pretend this is anything more than my personal opinion, and I'm still a FF fan and am happy if people enjoy it. But the spinoffs have no depth at all compared to the original. The quality has vastly deteriorated, I think, and whereas I do admit there are some parts I enjoy and appreciate in the new games, overall I wish they hadn't been made, and don't consider them canon.
