People liking something doesn't make it good, hence the ol' Twilight conundrum. Obviously, people are free to like what they want, power to them if they enjoy it, but I find the new installments, without exception, completely cheese, retconning, graphics over substance, bad dialogue, and generally ruining the awesome characters and world of the original game.

I actually was in the fandom when the original game was fairly new, before the Compilation (the glory days, as I like to call them). FFVII's plot holes were half its charm - I like the "less is more" style, the hints that never become anything, and the ending where everyone very well could have died, with humanity being wiped out. Some of those questions are answered in the original game, actually, the amazing part of it is that the basic plot is simple and understandable, the details are confusing but not frustrating, and playing it a few times can make the picture clearer but everything would never be answered. The characters were strong, multi-dimensional, and the world was more or less matured. Does the game have flaws? Sure... I suppose, but I don't consider those plot holes to be flaws, I like that balance.

I actually have played/watched the spinoffs, and I disagree - filling in plotholes is a delicate thing to try, but they stuffed 'em full of concrete. They are cheesy with subpar dialogue and forced angst, I couldn't stand all the retconning or how things were changed, and the focus of the games was each basically a circle wank over some male protagonist - AC, Cloud, CC - Zack (ugh fuck Zack so much, I cannot be the only one out there who hated him in that game with the whole "you are my living legacy, bawww," and puppy bullshit), Dirge - Vincent, and so on.

Anyway, I don't mean to pretend this is anything more than my personal opinion, and I'm still a FF fan and am happy if people enjoy it. But the spinoffs have no depth at all compared to the original. The quality has vastly deteriorated, I think, and whereas I do admit there are some parts I enjoy and appreciate in the new games, overall I wish they hadn't been made, and don't consider them canon.
