I think it's really weird that asshole male fans have told you you HAVE to use "pegasister". I've had the exact opposite happen - a male fan told me I HAD to use "brony". I guess it would sour your experience either way =/

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)Both things happened to me. When I first got into fandom I was told I absolutely couldn't call myself a brony. I think "pegasister" sounds silly so I went with "pony-fan".
Cue a few months later and I got fans telling me I AM a brony, no ifs or buts about it, omg why won't you admit you like the show, we have to show solidarity no matter what other fans do~.
And then I stayed the hell away from the fandom.

I don't really do much with the online fandom. irl I've encountered a variety of people - some I liked, some not so much or in-between.
Maybe the reason it has such a bad reputation is you'd expect the fandom to be so much nicer...but it's just as wanky and messed up as any other fandom =/

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)You know, I think that's a huge reason for the backlash. I know several bronies are protesting about having "love and tolerate" applied to them because it's not true, but it was kinda their motto for a long time.
I think another reason is its size. It's as wanky and messed up as other fandoms, but it's so big that it's much more noticeable.

It is everyone's right to choose to identify as they want and if someone thinks they have the privilege of overriding that, there's a serious problem going on.
If somebody did tell me I HAD to use brony, I would probably kick up a melodramatic fuss over my non-binary gender. (That said I really like what I've seen but I've only watched like two episodes whoops)

(You should watch more of the show. It can really give you the warm fuzzies ^^)
