Yeah, it bugs me too. I mean, I get it, gendered term and all that, but I don't have a problem with being in a group referred to as "you guys" either.

Some people do have a problem with that, and that's fine--I make the effort not to use gendered collectives for that reason. And the people who don't want to be referred to as "bronies" can call themselves "pegasisters" if they want to, and that's fine too.

But I really, really hate when some dudebro tells me that no, I have to call myself a "pegasister" because I'm female. Dude, I don't have to do anything, and I can refer to myself however I want. Sheesh.

Brony is unfortunately gendered, but until it became associated with some serious terrible dickery (which is why I don't call myself one anymore), it was just the collective term for MLP fans, like Trekkie. Fine.

heh, it really bothers me when people see "brony" as the collective term. You recognize it's gendered, but still thought of it as a collective term? =( sadface

I think it's really weird that asshole male fans have told you you HAVE to use "pegasister". I've had the exact opposite happen - a male fan told me I HAD to use "brony". I guess it would sour your experience either way =/

ayrt

Both things happened to me. When I first got into fandom I was told I absolutely couldn't call myself a brony. I think "pegasister" sounds silly so I went with "pony-fan".

Cue a few months later and I got fans telling me I AM a brony, no ifs or buts about it, omg why won't you admit you like the show, we have to show solidarity no matter what other fans do~.

And then I stayed the hell away from the fandom.

Yeah, that's a bad set of experiences. I'm sorry that happened to you. =(

I don't really do much with the online fandom. irl I've encountered a variety of people - some I liked, some not so much or in-between.

Maybe the reason it has such a bad reputation is you'd expect the fandom to be so much nicer...but it's just as wanky and messed up as any other fandom =/

ayrt (who was supposed to be nyart in my previous post, whoops)

You know, I think that's a huge reason for the backlash. I know several bronies are protesting about having "love and tolerate" applied to them because it's not true, but it was kinda their motto for a long time.

I think another reason is its size. It's as wanky and messed up as other fandoms, but it's so big that it's much more noticeable.

Very valid point. Makes me think of the Homestuck fandom. It's huge and full of wtf-ery because it's so huge, and many people won't go near it.

Yeah, like, I have bronies for friends and I've come to see brony as the sort of default term, but it's ridiculous to try to force somebody to accept a label they don't feel is applicable. I'm not gonna go out of my way to refer to "bronies and pegasisters and those of other breed" or anything, but I'll call the individuals what they want to be called.

It is everyone's right to choose to identify as they want and if someone thinks they have the privilege of overriding that, there's a serious problem going on.

If somebody did tell me I HAD to use brony, I would probably kick up a melodramatic fuss over my non-binary gender. (That said I really like what I've seen but I've only watched like two episodes whoops)

I don't blame you for making a fuss. If you don't feel like you identify with the label you shouldn't be told you have to use it. That's just...really not cool.

(You should watch more of the show. It can really give you the warm fuzzies ^^)

(I definitely intend to! I just have a terrible habit of never getting around to... anything, haha)

OP here. This is pretty much my feelings exactly. It's fine if other people want to call themselves pegasister or pony fan or whatever, but when I started out in this fandom, "brony" meant just an adult fan of the show in my corner of the internet, and my friends and I referred to each other as bronies without fuss or drama.

The term has definitely changed in general meaning since then, so in deference to others I don't often use it outside my little circle. But it's a term that means a lot to me personally, so I don't make a great secret that I think of myself as a brony... and every time I say something about it, some idiot swoops in to tell me that no, I'm not allowed to say "brony," because I'm a girl. I'm a "pegasister" or just "fan of MLP" or whatever.

I don't tell other people what they can call themselves, and I just wish other people would do the same for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's just so telling when male bronies want girls or kids to call themselves something else. You just know how they want to be special and ~different~ from the rest of the fanbase.

One time, a male brony actually told me I had to call myself "target audience" and I was like "excuse me? I'm 23. I'm sure I'm no longer the target audience, broseph"

Call yourself whatever you like. "Brony" isn't an official word anyways, so who the fuck cares if you want to use it for yourself or not?!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think the term 'brony' chafes me wrong is due to the fact that the terrible, wank causing, asshole male fans who toot their own horn the loudest call themselves that, and basically 'soured' the term for me.

to me, it's become synonymous to 'that asshole male fan'. Which, is sucky, due to the fact there are so many awesome fans out there, and they desrve to use the name (and make it a positive word!)

I used to call myself a pegasister, but then, I said "Eff it, I'm just a fan. I like the show."

I don't get why there have to be special labels, but eh. *shrug*
