No one but a fool ever wrote except for money.

That doesn't make any sense. There are plenty of people who write for reasons other than money, and turning writing into a lucrative career is much harder (and harder to control) than a lot of people think.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't entirely agree with it. And I kind of doubt whether the original person who said it (Samuel Johnson) entirely agreed with it. But it amuses me, and I think it is true that there's nothing wrong with getting money for your writing and that it's foolish to look down upon it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with getting money, either (or for writing primarily for money). Most people who act like writing is the perfect money-maker seem pretty naive, though. If the author in the OP wasn't able to churn out books every two weeks, her business model probably wouldn't work.

Then again, if the author took longer on her books, they might be better quality, and I do tend to think less of people who are willing to do a shitty job in the interest of a short-term reward.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty sad thing to say.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Guess I'm a fool, then.

Would I like to get paid for my writing, and still cry when I get rejected? Oh, hell yes. Do I count on getting paid? Oh, hell no. With only six short fiction sales under my belt, that would be truly foolish.

...guess all those fanfic writers who will never see a dime are fools too.

You know what, I think I'm in pretty damn good company.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you'er a one in a million like Steven King or something, since when was writing ever lucrative?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I typo while talking about writing.

ITT: nine out of ten people unaware that it's a famous quote by a famous author.

ITT: Nine out of ten people who think it's a stupid quote from a famous author.

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2013-03-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know it's a quote. It's just a pretty nonsensical one.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Using a famous quote to justify your opinion does not make it completely, rock-hard valid, nor does it make you better than everyone else.

oh child.

[personal profile] silverau 2013-03-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
A famous author said it, so we all have to agree with it? Okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
If nine out of ten people are unaware of it, it's not that famous.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
They aren't unaware.

Aren't like 90% of us here fanfic writers, lol

I guess it can make you feel cool to be able to provide an appropriate quotation, but first you should ask yourself whether it makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure it makes sense, if the aim is to call a lot of people here fools.

true facts. What is the fucking point if you don't plan to make a living off it eventually. Even when I write fanfic it's because I am honing my skills-- which fanfic is great for, btw, by giving the chance to do completely random scenarios.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who "plans" to make a living from writing fiction is a fool.

And "overnight success" takes about. . . ten years.

What a sad life you lead.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
The cover looks a bit like one of those drug store romance novels. I'm too lazy to really check it out, but if that's what it is I'm not really surprised.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually confused that everyone took this comment so seriously.

I dunno, maybe I'm weird. But the content of the secret combined with the nature of the quote made me think that it was meant to be a joke.

Huh. How about that.
wauwy: (:>)

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-03-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because 90% of the people here are fanfiction writers and they'll react sensitively to such a sentiment.
