phone interview

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Tomorrow I've got an interview to be a Hallmark retail merchandiser. It's supposed to take only 15 min, but I'm getting really nervous and I'm not sure I'm gonna do well or what sorts questions I should be expecting. Anyone have any advice?

Having gone on a few interviews recently:

Google "Questions I can ask during an interview" and "Questions I'm likely to be asked".

It'll give you a good place to start. Then write out the answers to your questions, and come up with some of your own. I always take a clipboard and write my questions down, so I don't forget them prior to arrival.

Pick out your outfit now, and don't change your mind.

Remember to smile. Lots.

Thanks for the writing stuff down tip. That usually helps me remember stuff better and I don't know why I didn't think of it before. :D

As the person above said, smile. Even though they can't see you, it really makes a difference in how you sound.

Are they going to call you or are you going to call them? Either way be sure to be in a place where you won't be disturbed/distracted. Obviously don't have your computer on in front of you or anything like that, or your TV. If you have a pet, make sure it's somewhere where it won't make noise/distract you/require your attention.

GOOD LUCK!

As the first commenting person said, google. Doing interviews recently I found this site very helpful:

http://www.job-interview-wisdom.com/

They have a section specifically on phone interviews, too.

If you can have a friend or relative practice with you tonight, phoning you and asking these questions, you'll feel better tomorrow.

I've done plenty of phone interview before (both as an interviewer and an interview). Coupla tips:

-Act as in you're actually going on an in-person interview. Wash your face, brush your teeth, wear something interview-appropriate. Though they can't see you, it'll still get you in the right state of mind.

-Similar to the above: Don't sit on a couch or a comfy chair. Sit at a desk or at your dinner table. That way, you're less likely to slouch and get in that state of mind.

-Have a pad and paper in front of you so you can jot down important info, write down questions for later, and/or remind yourself to talk about anything specific that the interview may want to know.

-Have a glass or bottle of water in front of you, just in case.

-Silence your cell phone, electronic devices, or any other thing with an off button that might make noise. You don't need the distraction.

-Be friendly and honest. As an interviewer, I could tell when people were bullshitting (lots of "ums" and awkward pauses after a particularly difficult question, followed by a quick and breathless explanation). Do not provide an answer to something you don't know. You can say that you're somewhat nervous (if true), or that you don't know, then give an explanation to the best of your ability.

-Take a few deep calming breaths in the few minutes before the interview is supposed to begin. You'll be surprised at how much it will put you at ease.

Good luck, anon, and let us know how it goes tomorrow!
