I sort of hate it if it ruins the character, and for me it often does. I didn't mind so much with Xena or Angel where the baby was quickly written out and you don't see them until they're adults. But I do mind when otherwise good shows get pointless baby storylines (see Bones, for example). The thing is that babies are inherently boring to anyone that's not the parent. They can't do much, you can't really do an action scene with them, and they demand attention. Which is why I don't like them in storylines too much, especially canon.

That being said, sorry about your loss. I'm glad you found a way in fandom that is a coping mechanism that works for you.

Um, I disagree that babies are inherently boring to anyone that's not the parent. I'm sorry, I don't want to be rude, and I know you didn't mean anything by it, but that's seems like a bit of an...uncomfortable generalization to me.

I was speaking from a storytelling perspective, mostly. Babies literally cannot do much that is visually interesting, or that even counts as an "action" screenwriting wise. They can't have dialogue, to begin with, nor can they actually go anywhere or do anything interesting. Sure you can have one or two shots of them being cute and smiling but that's about it. You can make other characters react to it - but then it becomes about the baby and not the plot.

Sure you could have interesting character lines about them being kidnapped or something, but they only go so far.
