Re: Pregnancies that ruined a character/show?

Bones is the most jarring example. I also really dislike that Gabby in Desperate Housewives ended up having kids despite her original stance/reluctance.
I'd offer House as another one, because that whole show just didn't need a child. I also really disliked the storyline of Queer as Folk where Mel and Lindsay have the whole custody battle going on with the second kid.

I only watched the first season of Desperate Housewives and of Queer as Folk and I've only seen random eps of House at my parents, not enough to even get the character names straight. But you have reminded me how much I was enjoying Queer as Folk; I need to buy that series. :)

Yeah, me too. It's one of those things I should own but I don't...

Bones? What's wrong with Bones?

And Gabby? Just because someone is reluctant to have kids doesn't mean she doesn't want kids. I thought that when she got pregnant with the gardner's baby and then had the miscarriage, that was when she realized it was something she wanted in the future.

Bones to me was all about the NON-romance. Yeah, Brennan and Booth had tension/chemistry, but they elected not to act on it for personal and professional reasons, and I found that dynamic utterly fascinating [and, if I'm honest, refreshing]. Their personalities were also so entirely different that I could see the relationship eventually going south due to it, although that's entirely speculation.
But when they ran out of ideas, they decided to turn the Bones/Booth dynamic a full 180 and had them become romantically involved. Which ruined half the show for me, because Bones' cool, logical, possibly ASD mindset got taken completely out of character by shoehorning romance in. There was a good way to have done it, but it wasn't that.

And then... Bones got pregnant, and suddenly the show wasn't Bones anymore but "As the World Turns" or something. It became all about the babies and romance. The show focused less and less on the actual plot of the episodes, and more and more on interpersonal relationships, until it was like, why are they even bothering to include a case in these anymore? They clearly don't care at all about anything that isn't love and babies. Siiiiigh.
And there went one of the only half-decent TV shows I watched.

Bones was NEVER about the non romance to me. For me, it was so obnoxiously always about the romance. They practially beat the audience over the head with the romance plots (Booth/Brennan, Angela/Jack).

But it was more about UST and suggestion before - and that way interesting, seeing those characters do that dance.

But now it's like it's become a bad fanfic of itself where everyone shacks up and has babies.
Hell, even Cam had to adopt totally out of the blue for some treason I still don't get.

Not a Bones viewer here, but I can't get behind the UST > actual romance thing.

On Castle, I never saw the chemistry between the two lead characters. It would not have bothered me a whit if they'd never hooked up. BUT, considering that nearly every episode had UST-y shenanigans (you two should be a couple! fake undercover kiss! x gets a new lover and y is jealous!) designed to impress upon the viewer that You're Supposed To Want These Two Together, them actually being together has been mildly less painful, thus far.

I say mildly because now there are *new* shenanigans (I don't fit in your world! someone might find out we're a couple! I don't know him as well as he does me!), but eh.

Bones to me was all about the NON-romance. Yeah, Brennan and Booth had tension/chemistry,

They did? Because to me, it was The Robot and The Idiot Have a Romance Because PLOT and FANDOM.

No, I'm not a fan of the show... I couldn't get past Automaton!Bones. For someone who's allegedly an anthropologist, she shows a shocking lack of understanding of basic human behavior. My favorite scene was where they were at a funeral and she said (in a robotic monotone, face absolutely expressionless), "These people are all grieving. I don't understand.". An (alleged) anthropologist. At. A. FUNERAL.

My husband used to like the show despite the epic stupidity, and I endured it/ignored it. But even he bailed after it became Babies Ever After.

See, with Gabby I saw that miscarriage completely differently.

I saw her as not wanting kids still - but acknowledging the loss she had suffered. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Even women who have had abortions often go through a mourning process. That doesn't mean they wanted the child - but they might still need to heal.

The fact that Carlos tampered with her birth control was absolutely disgusting, and it sickens me she ended up having kids with that man.

As for Bones, see my longer answer upthread.

Whoa, they had someone get their birth control tampered with? That's a form of abuse, and not okay. What light was it presented in?

In the light that he wanted biological kids and she didn't, because she was a model (literally) and didn't want to have her figure ruined. And he messed with her b/c pills.

She then got pregnant, but ended up miscarrying as had been said.

Sure, it's written as comedy, but there are no special circumstances that make Carlos' actions in any way forgivable.

She didn't want kids and he knocked her up against her wishes.

That's not funny in the slightest. Getting someone pregnant against their will is abusive. For her to miscarry on top of it is just cruel. Did she find out about it?

Honestly I don't recall...this was like in season 2 (and they ran for 8 seasons, and I didn't see much of the last few).

Late to the thread, dunno if you still care, but yes Gabby did find out that Carlos tampered with the pills. This was immediately before Carlos got shipped off to jail for an unrelated offense; by the time he was out she'd already miscarried.

The situation was presented as kinda skeevy but not abusive; but Carlos and Gabby's relationship was very unhealthy and abusive from the beginning. They both have families in which abuse happened; Gabby was raped by her stepfather and it's implied that Carlos' mother murdered his father. They emotionally blackmailed each other constantly, had sick little power games, broke each other's stuff for the hell of it, and frequently got physical. Then they divorced, she married another abusive man, other man died, and Gabby and Carlos got back together.

Their second marriage (when they had kids) wasn't NEARLY as horrible as their first. There were still some unhealthy control games being played but they both matured and learned to solve problems without abusing each other. And I'm as anti-kid-storyline as anyone I know, but I thought Gabby's progression from selfish, high-powered It Girl to abused/abusive wife to healthy (reasonably) well-adjusted mother was one of the more coherent arcs of the show.

I have to agree with you about House. Rachael was one of the many ways they drastically changed the show in a short time and it just wasn't fun to watch anymore.
