Oh man, I wrote this lengthy Trek fic a couple years back that centered around Bones and Spock, who I ship like burning, but the story didn't actually revolve around romance... and I had this question raging within me the whole time.

I wound up going with gen, because just like the canon, the connections and interactions between the characters would cause those who like shipping them to see the shippiness, while allowing those who didn't want to see it to see them as just close rivals/companions. At least, if I wrote it well enough, it would. I figure when in doubt, go with the closest you can get to the tone of the source material.
