gen or pairing, what to do

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm writing this fic, and it could go both ways -- either gen, or shippy. AND I CAN'T DECIDE WHAT TO DOOO! Has this ever happened to you, fellow writers of FS?

I only write a story when I know the whole thing. Sorry I can't help but good luck!

Damn, that must be nice... I envy you! And thanks :)

No, it means I almost never write >.

If you honestly can't decide which option is better for the story...well, gen is usually rarer, but shippy fics always get more hits.

It's strange, but I genuinely can't. The fic could easily go both ways, and I just... can't decide. I think you're right about the whole "shippy fics get more hints" thing, but in this particular case it's a pairing a lot of people abhor (it's incest), so I'm not sure it'd apply here.

Ah. Then I'd recommend doing it gen if you want more readers, unless you think the shippy route will be more interesting for you as a writer.

Keep it mostly gen with hints of shippyness? That's usually what I do in this situation.

Re: gen or pairing, what to do

I'd totally do that, except in this particular case the pairing is one that a lot of people really detest (it's incest). So I feel like I'd alienate a bunch of people -- or worse, get flamed for adding shippy hints without warning about it or something. Ugh, I dunno... I personally love both gen and pairing-stuff of these two characters, so it's difficult to decide. The story could genuinely go either way, too :\

If you feel like you'd have to warn for the shippiness, based on what you're saying, and you don't want to do that, then write it as gen.

Good subtext is such that it only COULD be read as shippy if the reader is so inclined.

I agree with this.

Yes. I'm writing a heroine big bang right now and while I know there are certain ships that need to happen along the way, I can't decide which if any should be the endgame.

Write both alternatives?

Oh man, I wrote this lengthy Trek fic a couple years back that centered around Bones and Spock, who I ship like burning, but the story didn't actually revolve around romance... and I had this question raging within me the whole time.

I wound up going with gen, because just like the canon, the connections and interactions between the characters would cause those who like shipping them to see the shippiness, while allowing those who didn't want to see it to see them as just close rivals/companions. At least, if I wrote it well enough, it would. I figure when in doubt, go with the closest you can get to the tone of the source material.

I always go with gen when I can't decide if I want to make it shippy or not. But that might just be because I suck at writing romantic scenes.

Oh yes! I tried writing a shippy ending to see how I liked it, and now that ship is my OTP. It's terrible, they were a brotp for me before, and it's a rarepair so I'm lonely, but oh well.
