It happened to me.

I was targeted as part of a long con, and really got burned at the end, when I tumbled to what they were doing, agitated enough to make the instigators wary of me in the middle of the chaos they were causing, then after I said the wrong thing in a moment of pique near the end of everything (it was totally a Bolivian Army Ending though LOL), they set out to try and destroy my reputation on the Internet. It backfired, however, as the instigators involved have never been heard from again, and I'm still posting away in the same circles I always ran in.

In my case, the warning sign was them saying one thing privately, and then saying the exact opposite privately. The public warning sign was how they tried to steer every conversation towards the topic of the con they were trying to sucker everyone into. The other warning sign was how the chief instigator consistently misplaced their fecal matter, and did mass deletions, popping up days to weeks later with yet another website, if anyone came close to even guessing at the long con they were running. Which went on for about three - four years, and I think they managed to scam quite a few people in the process.

Gut feeling is huge IRL, but incredibly hard to go by on the Internet. Something was definitely off when no one was able to have a conversation about anything, without it being immediately derailed into trying to promote the con, though. They also privately tried to harass and intimidate me via IM, because they were trying to verbally beat me down emotionally to the point where I would just accept the bill of goods they were trying to force-feed me and everyone else.

I assume their thinking was, if they destroyed every ounce of self-worth and emotional independence that I possessed, I would have no choice but to accept their skewed perspective of the world, just to make the verbal harassment/beatdowns stop. I tilt at windmills regularly, so instead I went in the exact opposite direction...which wasn't healthy for me either, but at least I didn't get sucked into their scam? At least that's what I tell myself, whenever it comes back to haunt me. Which it still does sometimes. It was a difficult period, and I'm an adult! (I was an adult when this happened, BTW, so it's not just something that happens to teenagers.) I don't think I would have survived it, if this had happened when I was a teenager.
