Well I thought Russell Crowe was the best of all of them, how do you think I feel?

No but c'mon, man, awards are pretty pointless. Hugh Jackman got plenty of work to begin with, he's going to keep getting tons of work, and now he doesn't have the pressure of being ACADEMY AWARD WINNING HUGH JACKMAN. He got tons of praise for his work in Les Mis and I'm sure it's not the last time he'll ever be nominated for an Oscar. I just...don't get why people get so upset about stuff like this.

I'd get a bigger kick out of it if he got an Oscar for playing Wolverine. ;p

Hugh was great, but there was no way anyone was winning Best Actor over Daniel Day-Lewis. Also while his acting was great, his singing was rough in places, so that probably didn't help.

Personally I didn't find Daniel Day-Lewis that great, but he played Lincoln, so ofc he was gonna win.

His rendition of Bring Him Home left a lot to be desired.

I felt bad for him all through it, TBH. Bringing it down half an octave would've been less of a musical affront than making him blast his way through it because he didn't have the range to sing it the way it's meant to be sung. And it would've been merciful for the audience, too.

Otherwise I liked him a lot, but yeah, that song was painful.

Hugh Jackman deserves ALL THE AWARDS.

EVER.

If he ever peed in a cup HE'D DESERVE AN AWARD FOR THAT TOO, BECAUSE HE'S HUGH JACKMAN.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I am torn between wanting to agree with this because I loooove him, and knowing that, nice and charming and multi-talented as he is, his Les Mis realness was just not Oscarworthy/perfect.

I am glad that he seems to have gotten a different agent/learned to discern scripts. The man has been in some awful movies.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah man, why didn't Hugh Jackman win Best Supporting Actress???

Why do people give so many fucks about the Academy Awards? They're pretty crappy judges of quality, the wins are more focused on pleasing the public and making some kind of social or personal point than grading quality. Not to mention "quality" is pretty subjective anyway, which means no awards are sacred referendums.

I don't think "pleasing the public" has much to do with them either, most of the time at least. I mean, how many people actually saw The Artist before it won?

Yeah that's true too. But if there is a definite public favorite, they usually bend over for it.

And yet they're still The Biggest Deal. Actors and actresses want it. Oscar-winning movies and movies with Oscar-winning performances find their grosses spike dramatically after a win, meaning actors and actresses can demand more money.

In short, $$$

Yeah, that's true.

Also...I'm sorry but I still can't figure out what your icon is supposed to mean and I've been staring at it for some time now. Enlighten me please?

They're about pleasing themselves. If they were about pleasing the public, the Best Picture race would have been between The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and Skyfall.

I AGREE.

If anything he should have gotten this:

But yes. :C

IA that he carried the movie. But he was up for Best Actor, not Best Supporting Actor. If it were the latter, he would have won easily. Alas, categorization.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
...No.

To be frank, he sang like he was on stage because he's used to it. She sang like she was in a movie, and I consistently cry at her parts. Half the time I'm wondering why the fuck Jackman is singing so loudly.

I do love him & he was very solid, but c'mon, that Oscar was always DDL's. (I was pulling for Joaquin, myownself. And I was forced to take points off for "Bring Him Home," since that was WAY out of his range.) Hugh will win someday, but hopefully for a better film all round.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
I thought his acting was fine. But his singing... Dear lord, his singing!

His singing came surprisingly close to ruining the movie for me. The (in)famous comparison: Russell Crow left some to be desired, but I had to break out my earplugs when he started in on the real tenor songs. His voice was tight, pushed, and screechy a lot of the time, particularly "Bring Him Home". And he's supposed to be the one with all the Broadway experience! So good, they closed the show when he cycled out, because no-one could possibly replace him! I was very disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much.

Crowe was not great but Jackman's voice was just disturbing, really tight and "nosy" if that's a way to say it (English as a second language... yeah), especially in "Valjean's soliloquy".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He impressed me more than she did, too, so +1.

Hugh Jackman was a good Jean Valjean. Anne Hathaway was the best Fantine I've ever seen, and I've seen a downright embarrassing number of productions of Les Mis.
