Are we not going to talk about how The Hobbit was robbed for best set design?

Nope. Because the Oscars have a history of abhorring sci-fi/fantasy movies. (Unless those movies are animated.)

You could have an amazing space opera filled with jaw dropping costumes but the Oscar for best costume will always go to some period piece, often set in within the last few decades or office drama. Because, again, the Academy will almost always turn their noses to sci-fi/fantasy.

Best example is look how the Special FX Oscar went to the Life of Pi in a year that had the likes of The Hobbit, The Avengers and Prometheus to choose from.

But the Return of the King swept the Oscars in 2004.

Because there would have been a revolt among the masses if it had been ignored like the previous two LoTR movies had. It was almost as if the Academy went, "FINE! We'll give the Oscar because I don't want some geek to slash my tires in the morning."

But look at Oscar's history, it doesn't like sci-fi/fantasy in general. The LoTR was almost ten years ago, when has a sci-fi/fantasy movie made big since then at the Oscars? And better yet, when was the last sci-fi/fantasy movie that made big at the Oscars before that movie? Good luck finding one.

Avatar did decently, but that had far more to do with James Cameron than it did with the sci-fi aspects.

Inception, District 9, Star Wars all got best picture nods. Not 'hard' scifi, but still...Fantasy is a bit broader, because most 'dungeon and dragons' fantasy aren't appealing to a wide audience/isn't taken seriously. But movies with fantasy elements are definetly not snubbed.

Out of curiousity, what scifi/fantasy films do you think should've gotten Best Picture noms/wins?

I thought Life of Pi's FX was better than the Avengers and Prometheus. I think Life of Pi had a surrealism that made it very 'wow', while most people knew, to an extent, what to expect from The Hobbit.

Ugh The Hobbit was robbed on everything. The way I see it, The Academy views it as simply an extension of LOTR and they already gave in and gave that awards so they see no need giving it what it deserves.

And in regards to the anon who mention Inception, District 9, etc, I see those as a lot different. District 9 itself was more of a social commentary than a sci-fi as the aliens were used as a statement about the slum segregation in So. Africa. And Inception was more of a "look how smart you are for figuring out this complicated for no reason story" sort of film rather than actual sci-fi/fantasy.

Uh, a lot of sci-fi has social commentary. Metropolis, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Thing, Farenheit 451, A Clockwork Orange, 1984-I can go on forever. You must be one of those geeks/fans claim to love sci-fi but hate it if there's not enough explosions or SFX.
