Are we not going to talk about how The Hobbit was robbed for best set design?
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-03-08 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Because the Oscars have a history of abhorring sci-fi/fantasy movies. (Unless those movies are animated.)

You could have an amazing space opera filled with jaw dropping costumes but the Oscar for best costume will always go to some period piece, often set in within the last few decades or office drama. Because, again, the Academy will almost always turn their noses to sci-fi/fantasy.

Best example is look how the Special FX Oscar went to the Life of Pi in a year that had the likes of The Hobbit, The Avengers and Prometheus to choose from.

no, because the oscars are meaningless. :)

No no no, we're going to talk about how The Hobbit was robbed of the best Best Hair and Make-up Oscar. I loved Les Miz, but COME ON ACADEMY.

(On a somewhat related note, I love your icon. <3 Kili!)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh The Hobbit was robbed on everything. The way I see it, The Academy views it as simply an extension of LOTR and they already gave in and gave that awards so they see no need giving it what it deserves.

And in regards to the anon who mention Inception, District 9, etc, I see those as a lot different. District 9 itself was more of a social commentary than a sci-fi as the aliens were used as a statement about the slum segregation in So. Africa. And Inception was more of a "look how smart you are for figuring out this complicated for no reason story" sort of film rather than actual sci-fi/fantasy.

Set design I could take or leave.

But Makeup?!?!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
wait a couple of years, it'll get everything once the trilogy is done, like LOTR.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention hair/makeup. I'm sorry, but the hair needs of 14 separate, very different men? WAY beyond Les Mis.

For what it's worth, I was bored by the musical when I saw it years ago, even though the actors were certainly talented and the singing was great on a technical level.

No offense to people who liked it! Maybe it just wasn't for me. But I can't help suspecting the movie wouldn't bore me any less.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I adore the musical and have seen it several times live. The movie version benefited from my residual goodwill from the musicals, and so I gave it a pass even though it was much weaker. So, yes, if you were bored by the musical, definitely stay away from the movie.

all I can say for certain is that they chose the actors based on their acting skills, not for their singing abilities

that said I really enjoyed Hathaway's singing, and I think she's a great actress - she's been acting for years and I'm glad she'll be taken more seriously now, regardless of the fact that I think receiving an Oscar isn't always about talent

the book and the play have always been a bit over-the-top, why shouldn't the movie be done in the same fashion? I enjoyed it because I'm a LesMis fan and I knew what to expect
I don't think it was a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it and I think the actors did a brilliant job with what they were given

it's one thing to dislike a movie but if you truly think this was one of the most boring films you've ever watched, you probably haven't seen that many movies

The movie could have been better. I thought the directing was a MESS and the editing could have been smoother, but idk. I didn't think it was that bad. Not Best Picture worthy. But not bad either.

Also I loved Anne's performance as Fantine. IDEC.

It suffered from one of the many problems Twilight had--about three kinds of shot choices. Far away establishing shot, wide shot for any physical moments, and close ups of whichever character was speaking every time there was a conversation.

I hated this movie adaption.

HATED IT.

Just by direction alone it shouldn't have been nominated, let alone win.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You know it's funny because I thought the movie was only okay the first time I saw it, and then I rewatched it after hanging out in the fandom and learning the context of a lot of things and I enjoyed it a lot more. And I can see the logic that that kind of research shouldn't be necessary to your enjoyment of the film, that it should be made for "new eyes", but eh, I still get a lot of it and now I'm reading the book and respecting some of the song lyrics more, when I thought they were kind of cheesy before. I mean they are kind of cheesy, but they're working with what Victor Hugo gave them, so. And I thought the singing was fine and the acting was great.

But hey if you were underwhelmed then...you were underwhelmed. I don't give a crap if it won an Oscar; I think the Academy Awards are pretty arbitrarily given, no real reflection of quality (Crash won Best Picture once, ffs). No way any movie was going to win when up against a movie ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT MOVIES ARE was up for Best Picture.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you're probably just not into musicals? Which is understandable, they're a bit niche. (Although I snerked a bit at the thought that Les Mis is campy, especially if you compare it to other actual camp musicals.)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
OK, look. I love musicals. I love Les Mis. However, I thought it was a goddamn weak adaptation of Les Mis.

Wait, this is an unpopular opinion? I loved the stage musical, but the movie didn't hold up against that or the book. It it didn't seem like many of the actors in the movie version could sing well, but I got the impression like some of them were trying to act like stage actors. I don't know much about critical opinion, but the morning news critics didn't seem to like it either. How is the movie so popular?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I find it more surprising when people are surprised that people take the Oscars seriously than when they don't. The Oscars, even if they are complete bullshit, pretty much set the tone for the next few years in film based on the actors/actresses who win and what sort of films do well. So it's not surprising to me that people would be upset if the films they see as good(Life of Pi being the most obvious choice) get snubbed if they would like to see more films like that rather than melodramatic musicals.
Obviously an Oscar means completely nothing when it comes to telling how good an film or person is, but they are taken seriously by the film industry and it sadly kind of controls the majority of what gets picked up.

I admit I don't think I've heard it called boring before, but the execution/direction was certainly pretty terrible and very nearly ruined it for me. The songs and emotion helped, but goddamn, Hooper, you suck. (That was the MOST boring one, though?? What about that stupid football documentary from last year? Still so pressed that that won. And how about Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close?? The Iron Lady??)

The cinematography was dreadful; the director really should have revisited basic concepts of film theory. I could explain, but Film Crit Hulk does a fantastic job here: http://filmcrithulk.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/hulk-vs-tom-hooper-and-the-art-of-cinematic-affectation/

If you didn't connect with the film, it was probably due to the directing, more than anything else.

The film itself was hit or miss with me.

But Hathaway owned that song.

No, it didn't sound pretty. But it sort of was busy ripping my heart into tiny itty bitty shreds.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, honestly. I hated the story in general because it felt to me like Terrible Things Happen To People And Then Keep On Happening: The Musical. There comes a point at which you hit a tragedy saturation point and push things over the believable level into "this is just too melodramatic to take seriously anymore" and Les Miz went way over and beyond that for me.

Eventually I just stopped caring about the cast because it felt like the author was trying too hard to make us feel sorry for them and it backfired.
