For what it's worth, I was bored by the musical when I saw it years ago, even though the actors were certainly talented and the singing was great on a technical level.

No offense to people who liked it! Maybe it just wasn't for me. But I can't help suspecting the movie wouldn't bore me any less.

I adore the musical and have seen it several times live. The movie version benefited from my residual goodwill from the musicals, and so I gave it a pass even though it was much weaker. So, yes, if you were bored by the musical, definitely stay away from the movie.

Funny thing: I did it the other way.
Read the Brick in anticipation of the movie.

Saw the movie, it bored me to tears and I couldn't get into any of the music. Jackman's singing voice struck me as terrible and I couldn't figure any of the logic behind Javert's songs.

Checked out the musical on youtube just to see the difference. First reaction was: oh my god, Javert's part actually makes musical sense if it's sung right! Ended up watching the WHOLE 1995 anniversary version, mesmerized by how awesome it is.

Oh, yes, Javert's part is AMAZING when it's done by a strong singer. LOVE the guy from the original London production. And I don't blame Russell Crowe - he's an actor, not a singer, and he tries - but what I really really wanted was a filmed version with actual Broadway musical singers.
