I find it more surprising when people are surprised that people take the Oscars seriously than when they don't. The Oscars, even if they are complete bullshit, pretty much set the tone for the next few years in film based on the actors/actresses who win and what sort of films do well. So it's not surprising to me that people would be upset if the films they see as good(Life of Pi being the most obvious choice) get snubbed if they would like to see more films like that rather than melodramatic musicals.
Obviously an Oscar means completely nothing when it comes to telling how good an film or person is, but they are taken seriously by the film industry and it sadly kind of controls the majority of what gets picked up.
