You know it's funny because I thought the movie was only okay the first time I saw it, and then I rewatched it after hanging out in the fandom and learning the context of a lot of things and I enjoyed it a lot more. And I can see the logic that that kind of research shouldn't be necessary to your enjoyment of the film, that it should be made for "new eyes", but eh, I still get a lot of it and now I'm reading the book and respecting some of the song lyrics more, when I thought they were kind of cheesy before. I mean they are kind of cheesy, but they're working with what Victor Hugo gave them, so. And I thought the singing was fine and the acting was great.

But hey if you were underwhelmed then...you were underwhelmed. I don't give a crap if it won an Oscar; I think the Academy Awards are pretty arbitrarily given, no real reflection of quality (Crash won Best Picture once, ffs). No way any movie was going to win when up against a movie ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT MOVIES ARE was up for Best Picture.
