Spider-Man is really Peter Parker. That much is true. That's the real him, and often the Spider-Man persona lets him grow as a person. But it is just a mask.
The idea that Batman is actually Bruce Wayne first is such a huge incredible lie by almost every modern interpretation. Bruce Wayne is the billionaire playboy, the irreverent charmer. Batman is the serious broody brood that he has always felt he really is. When he takes the mask off, he's still Batman. He has to pretend to be Bruce Wayne for everyone else.
I think Superman is equal parts Clark Kent and Superman. Neither is the whole or complete version, and they each feed into each other. The thing is, the Clark Kent you often see isn't even the real Clark Kent. It's a disguise to hide another disguise. The real Superman is very much his human counterpart: the values and morals he was raised with define him and make him who he is. It is the superpowerful god-like part of him that let's him carry out his morals.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 02:57 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's the most accurate idea I've seen: both Metropolis!Clark and Superman are mostly (but not entirely) disguises, and Smallville!Clark is the "real" person, but incomplete. It's all kinda fuzzy and not clear-cut, and that's what I like about it.

Unlike Supes the real identity is actually closer to the superhero identity than the public civilian identity, of course, so even softening the Batman/Bruce Wayne dichotomy like that makes Bill exactly backwards.
