I don't know. I get why that stuff could bother you, but I tend to find that it doesn't bother me. As long as the logic of the story holds true - as long as the emotional core of the story works - I can shrug all that off. And, for me, the central story of Superman stories works enough for me to enjoy reading them. To me, that's what matters. Sure all that stuff about whether you can breath in space or why you're vulnerable to magic can be pretty goofy, but to me, it has nothing to do with whether you can tell a good story.

But different strokes.

He should totally hook up with Lex instead, AMIRITE? ;)

Seriously though, OP, turn off your brain and read the old Superboy comics! They're hilarious and amazing; pretty much the only version of the character that I love.

That....had never occurred to me. D:

Am I the only one thinking of the "How does Superman clean his costume?" conversation on Big Bang?

He has to hold his breath underwater? The thing with Superman is that his powers and abilities can vary wildly from writer to writer. To be fair, that's something than happens with most superheros, but Supes gets it the worst.

He holds his breath underwater because it's a habit? Maybe he doesn't want to look like he's showing off.

The inconsistencies can be explained it two word: multiple writers. If you can't learn to shrug them off, you probably shouldn't be a fan of superhero comics.

The reason there's inconsistencies is because writers keep changing aspects about him. For a while he had to go into space with a rebreather or something, other times he's fine without it.

The outer space stuff and other details are...pretty standard "continuity? lol what's that?" fare for superhero comics.

As for Lois Lane...hmmm, this might be just one of those things you have to get. Difficult to explain.

The best I can ramble it is that (in most modern continuities, but of course it varies wildly by writer), before she knows his identity: she doesn't give a damn if he's a super-powered alien who saves the world and basically seems like a god, she still wants him to sit down for one damn second and explain to her what all this crap is about so she can provide the public with quality informative journalism, damnit. She's actually not "immune" to him -- she's very impressed and kind of dazzled and fascinated and usually has a crush on him, but she doesn't let her crush interfere with how she behaves towards him.

And after she knows his identity, she basically lols at him all the time whenever he gets all caught up in his world-saving concerns and she's always quick to bust out the lectures and lay out what actually matters and what's actually important and what he can feasibly accomplish and what pleasures he deserves for himself and how it'll be terribly inconvenient for the planet if he goes crazy obsessing over saving people, and reminds him that she'll be totally unimpressed with him if he starts slacking off on being Clark Kent and doing his job -- and being Clark Kent and doing his job is what keeps him grounded and gives him perspective.

Also, she's kind of a loud tactless dick. But a dick with lots of integrity and dedication to her job who can be really sweet and thoughtful and sympathetic. And she's got massive balls of steel. And she's impulsive and not at all mild or reserved or cautious. So, y'know, complimentary contrasts with Clark Kent's personality combined with very closely shared values and goals and priorities. She worries about him and will bitch at him if he doesn't spend enough time with her, as she should, but she doesn't dream of him being normal or want a super-conventional relationship, and she sure as hell doesn't have any free time on her hands to languish at home feeling lonely while he's out superheroing.

Mind you, this varies all over the place depending on the writer. Not all of it is true all the time, and not all of this comes together all at once. It's really hard to pin down decades-long superhero comics relationships like that. But that's all the disparate recurring wonderful elements of their relationship kind of pulled together.

I'm not a Superman fan because the nutter can't even coordinate his jockey shorts with his tights.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race.

This is why he sucks, OP.

You know what really does my nut?

The shaving thing.

How does superman shave? The only example shown is by him bouncing his heat vision off a mirror. But here's the thing: if the heat vision is strong enough to cut through kryptonian hair, how is it not strong enough to melt / cut through the mirror?!

MADNESS!

Most of those inconsistencies are just that; writers change on comics so often that the little things get lost and contradicted because you can't remember everything, especially a character that has so much history. Perfect example, he has been shown to be a super genius. It's just not something that's touched on all the time and/or by every writer. They also have to put him in some kind of peril - which is why kryptonite was eventually created - otherwise there would be no tension and he'd solve every problem in ten seconds.

AS for the Lois love, I don't get that, either.

Want to be really confused? Superman can fly. He used to just be able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound", but then he could fly. Why? Because why the fuck not, that's why.

Honestly... all of the DC heroes beyond Batman really have to be approached from a more modern-myth characterization/story standpoint. They can't be treated as "real people" the way Marvel heroes can.

When they're written that way (and it takes a skillful writer), they're enjoyable. But it's rare.

Umm... he holds his breath in space, actually.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, actually...

1) He holds his breath in space. But he can do it for long, long periods of times.

2) He IS a super genius, but it's a trait most people ignore right now because the moment someone else is smartet than Batman, Batman just becomes obsolete. And DC love their Batman.

3) I... don't know. I never got it, either. Then again, it's better than him being with Wonder Woman.

Read the original stories, they reprint them!

[personal profile] philippos42 2013-03-09 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Superman is a mixed bag. It depends on the writer.

Read the early Siegel and Shuster stories, seriously. If you can see the flaws in that and enjoy it for what it is anyway, I think you can appreciate a lot of the superhero genre. It's a power fantasy about a basically regular being able to fearlessly fight injustice because he has all these powers.

I have a weird soft spot for the movie Superman II, but I didn't like it at first.

I think Joe Kelly and Elliot S! Maggin wrote some good Superman stories.

And really I think Superman could do almost anything Batman could do, and twenty times faster, but editors try to downplay Supey's super-intelligence so Batman has something to be best at in the JLA.
