As for Lois Lane...hmmm, this might be just one of those things you have to get. Difficult to explain.
The best I can ramble it is that (in most modern continuities, but of course it varies wildly by writer), before she knows his identity: she doesn't give a damn if he's a super-powered alien who saves the world and basically seems like a god, she still wants him to sit down for one damn second and explain to her what all this crap is about so she can provide the public with quality informative journalism, damnit. She's actually not "immune" to him -- she's very impressed and kind of dazzled and fascinated and usually has a crush on him, but she doesn't let her crush interfere with how she behaves towards him.
And after she knows his identity, she basically lols at him all the time whenever he gets all caught up in his world-saving concerns and she's always quick to bust out the lectures and lay out what actually matters and what's actually important and what he can feasibly accomplish and what pleasures he deserves for himself and how it'll be terribly inconvenient for the planet if he goes crazy obsessing over saving people, and reminds him that she'll be totally unimpressed with him if he starts slacking off on being Clark Kent and doing his job -- and being Clark Kent and doing his job is what keeps him grounded and gives him perspective.
Also, she's kind of a loud tactless dick. But a dick with lots of integrity and dedication to her job who can be really sweet and thoughtful and sympathetic. And she's got massive balls of steel. And she's impulsive and not at all mild or reserved or cautious. So, y'know, complimentary contrasts with Clark Kent's personality combined with very closely shared values and goals and priorities. She worries about him and will bitch at him if he doesn't spend enough time with her, as she should, but she doesn't dream of him being normal or want a super-conventional relationship, and she sure as hell doesn't have any free time on her hands to languish at home feeling lonely while he's out superheroing.
Mind you, this varies all over the place depending on the writer. Not all of it is true all the time, and not all of this comes together all at once. It's really hard to pin down decades-long superhero comics relationships like that. But that's all the disparate recurring wonderful elements of their relationship kind of pulled together.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:50 am (UTC)(link)The only thing I'd add is that Lois Lane is one of the few non-powered mortals on Earth (besides Batman and Lex Luthor) who actually pose a challenge to the Man of Steel. While it's true that a lot of things depend on who's writing them, in practically every incarnation, it's accepted as gospel fact that Lois is a far better reporter than Clark Kent is. (Even in the 30's and 40's, way before Women's Lib, she was at very least his equal which, for the time, is saying something.) Kent has to work /hard/ to keep up with her, which is not something he's used to doing.
Now add to /that/ dynamic the fact that this ultra-capable reporter is doggedly applying her not-inconsiderable skills to uncover the truth behind his every secret (whether it's trying to prove that Clark Kent is Superman in the Golden and Silver Age stories, or just muckraking his origins in the modern ones). Not only does Clark Kent have to work hard to keep up with her, but Superman has to work even harder to keep one step /ahead/ of her. (Seriously, some of the ridiculous lengths the poor schlub has to go to in the Silver Age stories just to keep his secret identity intact are hilarious in their sheer Rube Goldberg-ness.)
So, yeah...of course he's gonna dig her. Not even Wonder Woman can make him jump through hoops like that, New 52 be damned.

And haha, I've read way too many old Superman comics from the '80s and '90s, which were mostly blah (or X-TREEM) on plot, but had some really grand ol' characterization and truly memorable worldbuilding/social-circle-development that I really miss :(

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 05:23 am (UTC)(link)Lois is a pure Vanilla non-powered mortal and stares the down the likes of Darkseid, Lex Luthor, Doomsday, etc. She is courageous, resourceful, determined and brilliant. She probably gets herself out of messes as much as Superman does and she never backs down from finding the truth or standing up for what's right. She often defends those without power against those who abuse them
