Part taste, part acclimatisation. Even if you're not naturally inclined towards it, it's definitely possible to train yourself to get used to it. Wouldn't suggest jumping in the deep end, though. Gradually increase the level of spice, waiting until you're used to the current amount before going for more.

I'm not a huge fan of spicy food myself, but half my family is, so sometimes I wind up having to eat it anyway. It'll never be a favourite, but I can handle it. I'd definitely suggest having a dairy-based drink on hand (milk, yoghurt, whatever) - that really douses the flames if you're struggling.
