Spicy food lovers

How do you do it? Is it something you have to build up to?

I can tolerate mildy spicy things and find them quite tasty, but anything more (like Korean food) and I'm coughing and hacking. Sometimes I get a bad sore throat for days.

Yeah, I think it's partly something you build up resistance to, and then partly, just something that you like or don't like. You can build up resistance and get used to more and more spicy things, but at the end of the day, you either like the sensation of spicy food or you don't.

But if you enjoy the flavor of moderately spicy things, it's probably just a matter of acclimating yourself to it, and just eating spicy food till you get used to it.

*nods* You have to be used to it. :) But spicy food can be addictive once you're used to it, especially if it's made with a lot of salt.

I'm Malay and I've never liked spicy food. Sometimes I can tolerate otak-otak and laksa Penang, but otherwise, no. There's always a couple of days at work where I won't eat because they're serving spicy fish or something. I am an outcast amongst Malaysians when it comes to food lmao.

There's a reason why in India, a yogurt-based drink like Lassi is served along side spicy food.

If you aren't lactose intolerant, try drinking a tall glass of milk rather than water, juice or soda along side your next spicy meal. See how you body handles the spicy food then.

For me, it's because I've been eating them since childhood that I am able to eat all the curry and spicy dishes I could ever eat. I will admit though that to this day I have never eaten anything that has cili padi in it (Think super-mega-ultra-chilli in a tiny green package).

And Korean food being spicy!? I think you've never heard of Rendang. (Well, okay. Their kimchi does taste a little hot for the uninitiated.)

Aha, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Indonesian food but the pictures on wikipedia look so gooood. See, I wanna be able to try things like that without crying. ;_;

Part of it is acclimation, but part of it is also just your palate. I can't handle spicy foods at all, even though I'm happy to try things that have flavor outside of just "spicy." (It usually ends up with my mouth burning for a while after, though.) My partner, on the other hand, loves spicy things and isn't bothered by them at all. I don't know how he does it, and I'm not sure he does, either xD;; It's just the way our tastes are.

I've always loved spicy food, from since I was a kid.
I would always eat things spicier, and spicier, until my body got used to it.

You can't really just go from mild to extremely spicy - your body (and taste buds) will probably think it's poison or something. Start with smaller before you go for bigger. Genetics can play a part in it, too, but I think it's more about what your body is used to.

sa

forgot to add that no matter how spicy the food I eat is, after eating my mouth stops burning in about 10-30 minutes

Hmm I do like mild/moderately spicy things. I'm not sure what my threshold is. All I know is if I bite into something it's either mmm yummy or HOLY SHIT FIRE. I guess that's something I have to figure out first.

I honestly have NO idea how I ended up liking hot-type spicy foods - I don't like my curries quite 'Indian-hot', but I do like to have a good burn going, and my favourite Mexican place uses a hot sauce that leaves my lips numb for 10 minutes after eating there...but nobody else in my family can handle the least amount of heat. (Up side...if I can get the brand of/recipe for the hot sauce the Mexican place uses I can put a bottle in the fridge, and it won't get eaten unlike almost anything else I'm silly enough to put there.)

Non-heat spice is even iffy.

When I push my limits, I like food with fresh hot peppers best. They have this pleasant glowing green-tasting burn that's a lot easier to push your spice limits on without coughing or having your throat get scratchy than with dry spices. Even when I tried eating fresh jalapenos all by themselves in small quantities, my mouth gets set on fire, but it didn't hurt my throat because they're so green and juicy.

I've been eating really spicy food since I was a toddler though, so I have kind of built up to it.

you definitely build up to it

and like someone else said, make sure to eat it alongside stuff that can bring it down and not burn through your stomach

Korean food can be really deadly. I used to eat a soup that made me cry while I ate it it was so spicy. It was worth every tear tho.

I never built up my spiciness -- I just let the tears flow and the mouth burn. But I am a spice masochist. Building up slowly to spicer foods would be the best and sane way to go :)

Part taste, part acclimatisation. Even if you're not naturally inclined towards it, it's definitely possible to train yourself to get used to it. Wouldn't suggest jumping in the deep end, though. Gradually increase the level of spice, waiting until you're used to the current amount before going for more.

I'm not a huge fan of spicy food myself, but half my family is, so sometimes I wind up having to eat it anyway. It'll never be a favourite, but I can handle it. I'd definitely suggest having a dairy-based drink on hand (milk, yoghurt, whatever) - that really douses the flames if you're struggling.

i dunno i've always loved it

if you're trying to build up more of a tolerance for it though (which can be done!) it helps to have a glass of milk with your korean ass-fire noodles as milk neutralizes the spicyness (whereas water almost makes it worse)
