Blame the girlfriend (and him)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
She might have told him not to stay friends with you because she's threatened by you. It happene dto me with one of my best guy friends. WHen I found out later, he was NOT forgiven. People have to stand up to jealous girlfriends and boyfriends and stand up for a valued friendship!

So let's say your friend is in an abusive relationship, and that's why s/he's acting weird. Eventually, s/he manages to get out and contacts you. Would you react by saying, "I can never forgive you! You should have stood up for yourself and for our friendship"?

If a bar of soap falls into the ocean, does it still get frothy? Do the fish smell like cucumber-watermelon?

I rest my case.

Wait. Why are the fish smelling like cucumber-watermelon? Was that the scent of the soap?

IA. After reading OP's story, I thought of the girlfriend right away, as well. I wonder if her male friend, by saying things like "feminazi", was actually parroting his gf's words? Jealousy of OP and feeling threatened by her because the bf and OP have "inside jokes" and share an interest, not to mention feminist views, are indeed good theories, IMO. The guy backing off may simply have been the reaction his gf wanted from him. Who knows, the gf may not even be a feminist herself.

My best male friend is someone I've known for over 15 years (I'm 32) and pretty much every gf in his life was giving me the side-eye at least once or twice, for no reason other than insecurity and jealousy on their part. Sure, not every gf is jealous and deeply insecure like that, but there's plenty of them who ARE, especially those less experienced and those who've been burned before.

Hah, I'd just put a similar comment on this then saw yours. I think it's probably what's happened. I've seen people dump friends because partners are jealous.

As a friend though, I never expect my friend to prioritise me over their gf/bf. I think if they did then the partner would be justified to feel miffed, even if they weren't a jealous type. Partner trumps friends, in the same way that a life partner should be supported if any of your family are mean to them etc. Not talking about casual relationships here when they are doing a bit of dating, but if they are in a serious relationship.
