It's like your examples make the argument against you for me. Because, yes, what happens to Theon is obviously worse. But at the same time - why is the negative thing that happens to the lady quite sexual in nature, and the thing that happens to the man is not? You're seriously going to tell me that's irrelevant?

It's not really that important who gets it worse - which fictional character suffers more. They're fictional characters. What matters is how GRRM treats characters and how he writes them, and for that reason, the second thing is more problematic than the first.

(And don't try to tell me that castration is a sexual punishment in the way that Cersei's punishment is)

Yeah, I see it as a particularly vulgar sort of violence, but much more in the bodily harm category than the sexual violation category. Though of course, not completely removed from the sexual violation category.

Then you shouldn't feel Cersei's walk was a sexual violation, since she was just naked and walking and that's it. It was a violation of her pride.

That's not what I think, of course, but it's just as much of a stretch as the idea castration is not a sexual violation. Is cutting off a woman's labia not a sexual violation to you?

I hated what GRRM did to Cersei, though. I wanted her to be punished because she's stupid and cruel and has done horrible things, not because she has fucked some guys. Her punishment is the only time I felt Martin was being sexist.

I should probably preface this by saying that I know very little of the fandom in question, BUT: I think castration is much of a "sexual punishment" as it can get. I'm kind of baffled that you'd think someone being forced to walk around naked somehow trumps that. I mean, nudity doesn't equal sex -- but castrating someone, making sure that he can't procreate (or possibly even have intercourse), is undeniably tied to it.

A possible line of thinking to explore as to why people have these different reactions might be because Theon's story is full-on body horror. The castration is part of that. It's visceral and sickening in the same way the Saw movies are. So perhaps there's a sense in which the sexual element is sublimated beneath general fear of mutilation for some readers?

Cersei's punishment otoh is about shaming her and making her sexually vulnerable. Shame, and fear of the mob whom we've seen rape before, and the knowledge that this punishment is about threatening her as a woman are possibly just different horror-triggers, and people have different levels of susceptibility.

I don't think it makes sense to downplay one for the sake of the other at all, but there could be an interesting conversation in the different fears they play on because of how they're gendered and sexualised.

Except that Ramsay and Theon's "relationship" has a lot of uncomfortable sexual/dominant overtones in it? And is full of degradation and humiliation? And castration is definitely a sexual punishment (made even worse by Ramsay continuously rubbing it in Theon's face afterwards that he's "not even a man"). I don't understand your reasoning for that, anon.
