I'm still baffled that Brave won over Wreck-It Ralph or Paranorman.

Thoughts and opinions on quality aside, did you really think the Oscars were going to vote for a video game based movie?

The Oscar voters are mostly old white dudes with hardons for movies as their end all be all art form. Wait about 20 years and all the majority of people that actually like or grew up with video games will be the majority of voters.

This. I liked Brave but thought WIR was much better. Sometimes I wonder if they actually watch the animated movies or just look for Pixar on the list and pick that.

I'm being a nerd and looking at past wins, and I think they watch if there are only a couple up for nomination or where none are Pixar/are weak Pixar films. Wallace and Grommit won in a year where there were only three nominations total (Howl's and Corpse Bride), and Spirited Away won in a year where there was no Pixar at all. Same with Rango.

Happy Feet won in a no-Pixar year, too, but IDEK how to start explaining that. I would have rooted for Monster House.

Realistically, you have to have a shit-load of free time to see ALL of the Best Picture nominations and then everything else, so Animation is probably the one they skip or ask their kids about. I saw all five nominees and half of the Best Picture ones by sheer chance, and the ones in the latter were long this year.

Spirited away...I need to watch that again. I adored that movie.

It's probably one of my very favorites out of their long list, and I still go back to it often. It's got gorgeous atmosphere.

Yes, in fact I need to pull out all of my Hayao Miyazaki movies and watch them. The always movie me, make me smile, or rip my heart out.

Happy Feet won in a no-Pixar year

Actually, it beat Cars. And Shrek beat Monsters, Inc. So, yeah, Pixar has lost a few times, but not often.

You're right! I was a dope and was looking at another year, but I did reference the other ocassions in my first sentence ("or where none are Pixar/are weak Pixar films").

I'm bummed it doesn't happen more often. I loved Ratatouille but knowing it was up against Persepolis... hard choices.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I totally ignore Cars where I can, so maybe it was more than just a slip on my part.

wow Cars is my far my least favorite pixar movie but it was miles better than the crapfest that is Happy Feet "it's a movie about being yourself, it's a movie about friendship, NO WAIT IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT ENVIRONMENTALISM OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Happy Feet won over Cars, which is Pixar.

[personal profile] ex_valour601 2013-03-10 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, femn pointed it out yesterday--it should have been a 'weaker movie year' versus a no-movie year, but I was glancing at the wrong category. Thank you anyway, anon!

I actually saw all of the nominees and then some (aka RotG) and to be quite honest, I didn't think any of them deserved a win in terms of overall quality, because they either had some execution problems (Brave + Paranorman's middle) or were well-done but not spectacular (the other three, but mostly Pirates! and Wreck-It-Ralph, which I both loved).

When it's a year like that I try to look at it in terms of technology, and I wanted Laika to be rewarded for pushing stop-motion a bit further than Burton did, but Merida's hair was just too impressive, I guess. I'm really ambivalent about Brave's win, and I wish there had been something strong enough to push past it.

...I know I put more thought into it than the Oscar voters probably do, but it makes me feel better. I even dream of there being a cinematography category for animation so weaker but beautiful stuff can get nominated (aka RotG, again). That would have been a good fit for Brave.

Now I'm just staring at the various years and wondering how Happy Feet managed to beat Monster House. Oh, animation category. 2002 was the only time I was ever pleased about a win.

EDIT: Oh, but everyone should definitely give Pirates! a rent. IT HAS BRIAN BLESSED IN IT.

It's Pixar, it usually gets it by default.

Personally I think it should have been Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists. And I loved Brave
