Plot Spoilers

I really disliked this movie for the same reason I disliked his last Batman movie.

The whole driving force of that film is the brothers' relationship. But because everything is stored up for a big plot twist at the end, you never actually get to see them. The relationship you have been invested in between Bale and Norton turns out to be a complete misconception. So on a rewatch I found that the rivals' relationship was hollowed out, and there was nothing to replace it with. I walked away wanting to watch a whole different movie about what it would mean for twins to live their lives the way they did.

Is the book the same?

I wondered if it was a Nolan problem, because the Talia/Bane relationship suffered in exactly the same way in DKR. Their feelings for one and other are the most important driving factor in understanding everything that happens, but we're denied ever seeing it for the sake of a cheap gotcha.

I agree with you about Talia/Bane: we really did need more of them onscreen together. But I have to disagree about the twins: not elaborating on their relationship makes us guess more about why they chose to live the way they did and makes us think about the moral and practical and personal sacrifices and consequences of choosing such a half-life, and the guessing and wondering is quite a lot of fun for some of us.

And if you want a different movie, you can always right fanfiction.

(Same anon here) Also, if you re-watch it several times, you can begin to spot which twin is in which scene. For instance, the more subversive (and more "anything for magic") twin (I call him Freddie) is the one who goes to see Angier's finale show; the less subversive twin (the one who lives; I call him Alfred) is the one who says "Don't call me Freddie...it doesn't feel right" to Olivia when he goes to see her. And always pay close attention when Borden talks to Fallon (really Alfred talking to Freddie and vice versa). You can unravel pieces of their relationship upon multiple viewings, which you can't really do with Talia/Bane.
