I've gotten the impression that most people feel that way. Well, either that or "There's a book? I didn't know."

Jackman and Bale do give the movie quite the boost, I'll grant you.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's particularly shocking considering how drawn out and boring the movie was.

I love Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman and David Bowie, but... yes. This.

I loved that movie.

I strongly agree. I read the book after seeing the movie, and found that the plot differs so much that the central moral dilemma (to me, at least) didn't really exist in the book at all.

*SPOILERS*

After all, in the book when Angier uses the device, the old "version" of himself dies during the process, while in the movie he actually KILLS the other one, which is much more interesting and raises more ambiguous ethical questions. Is it murder? If not, why? How far is too far for something you love? etc.

I really disliked this movie for the same reason I disliked his last Batman movie.

The whole driving force of that film is the brothers' relationship. But because everything is stored up for a big plot twist at the end, you never actually get to see them. The relationship you have been invested in between Bale and Norton turns out to be a complete misconception. So on a rewatch I found that the rivals' relationship was hollowed out, and there was nothing to replace it with. I walked away wanting to watch a whole different movie about what it would mean for twins to live their lives the way they did.

Is the book the same?

I wondered if it was a Nolan problem, because the Talia/Bane relationship suffered in exactly the same way in DKR. Their feelings for one and other are the most important driving factor in understanding everything that happens, but we're denied ever seeing it for the sake of a cheap gotcha.

I agree with you about Talia/Bane: we really did need more of them onscreen together. But I have to disagree about the twins: not elaborating on their relationship makes us guess more about why they chose to live the way they did and makes us think about the moral and practical and personal sacrifices and consequences of choosing such a half-life, and the guessing and wondering is quite a lot of fun for some of us.

And if you want a different movie, you can always right fanfiction.

(Same anon here) Also, if you re-watch it several times, you can begin to spot which twin is in which scene. For instance, the more subversive (and more "anything for magic") twin (I call him Freddie) is the one who goes to see Angier's finale show; the less subversive twin (the one who lives; I call him Alfred) is the one who says "Don't call me Freddie...it doesn't feel right" to Olivia when he goes to see her. And always pay close attention when Borden talks to Fallon (really Alfred talking to Freddie and vice versa). You can unravel pieces of their relationship upon multiple viewings, which you can't really do with Talia/Bane.

Haven't read the book (kinda want to) but I adored this movie. Not only is it pretty as hell, I found the storyline and characters fascinating and thought the actors did an excellent job.

Saw the movie. Read the book. Liked the movie SO much better.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's pretty much the only time that's happened for me but I was so excited to read the book and it just wasn't as good. I don't even remember specifics, but I can still watch the movie on a fairly regular basis and love that it still keeps me intrigued.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen this movie. But it has David Bowie in it, so that might have something to do with it. The rest of the cast is also good.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it is, it has David Bowie as Nikola freakin' Tesla.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the movie, but I've heard this is the prevailing opinion. Probably because magic tricks would be very hard to write about---they need to be seen to be effective.

Also, this is one of my favorite films ever. I feel like it doesn't get enough love.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Very underrated movie, IMO. The book was a lot slower and lacked the movie's tension and suspense. I don't think it wasn't written for the purpose of being a suspenseful novel, but still.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
The book was interesting and creepy as hell in it's own weird way, but nothing beats the mind-fuck final second of the movie.

When I saw it the first time, I was unable to say anything but "What did I just SEE?!" for the next hour. :D The book just left me feeling watched.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
TRUTH. the book is decent, but the movie is phenomenal.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the movie and I love it. I don't care about anything else XD
