...seriously? Because if you're reading Naruto, you must also have come across Itachi, Orochimaru, Kabuto, the Akatsuki...

Not that I'm knocking your interpretation of Sasuke (I don't really care enough about Naruto anymore, honestly), but it seems really strange to single him out as the "biggest fictional asshole you've ever seen" when even in his own series there are characters who do many, many more nasty things than he does. (Not to excuse his self-destructive, irresponsible, and occasionally hurtful behavior, but TBH I don't even remember more than a handful of really asshole-ish things he's done, unless you count his standoffish and somewhat arrogant attitude.)

You could be working off a different definition of "asshole," though, and excluding actual villains from it by default.

Well, of course.

Well, to me, the way he treats people around him, especially people who are more or less his friends, is incorrigible. He does a lot of psychological damage to Sakura, and post time jump, to Naruto, the way he discards the village, etc. At this point he hardly has to do anything, considering how the two groups haven't run into each other. Just the memory of him is enough to send Naruto into a spiralling depression (or a blinding obsessive motivation, neither of which are particularly healthy).

I dunno if I am ruling out villains, though. I'm probably too tired to think right now, but there are few villains who really appalled me with their behavior. Fictional mass murderers are only so shocking the first few times I encountered it in fandom. ...When I was what, eleven. I guess I'm just desensitized by stereotypes and cliches or something.
...Or jaded by the fact that some of that "villainous" shit happens on our planet every day e___e

I agree, but this isn't something you can rightfully blame Sasuke for. Sakura and Naruto are the pursuers. They make the decision to chase and Sasuke makes the decision to avoid. My speculation is that if he were anything but cold, calm and to the point when he forced to address them it would be even crueler, since that would give them false hope when Sasuke knows that he can't return, but that's neither here nor there.

Naruto's blinding obsession probably has a lot more to do with being starved for love for too long than it does with anything Sasuke has consciously done to encourage it, since, well, he's done pretty much everything he can to discourage them both. Sasuke ends up being the one to remind him that his dream is to become Hokage when Naruto seems to all but have forgotten about it. Again, my speculation would be that he is encouraging his old team to jump ship while they can, since Sasuke understands that his goal is destructive and he'd rather push the last people he ever cared about away from that. But that's neither here nor there.

My respectful two cents. Just adding to the discussion. :)
