I had a friend who, after reading the first half of Anna Karenina, said "Kitty and Anna were in love, and Kitty was sad when Anna left her for Vronsky, so she rebounded with that girl at the spa!" And I just had to shake my head and wish that they were dead.
I suspect making it smutty does make it more fun to read, which may be a worthy goal in and of itself. :)
