I'm guessing that the tunnels start stretching them right from the start, it's just so gradual at first that they don't notice until it really starts getting deforming. That way they'd no longer fit when they tried to go back to the smaller section of the hole that was shaped to them when they first came through.

That's the only way I can make "It's built so they can go forward but not back" make sense in my mind (yeah, I know I shouldn't worry too much about sense in a story where people stay alive and mobile for weeks without food even when their bodies are crushed).

I figured the holes were at a slope so that by that point gravity was pulling them forward.
