That's part of the whole thing. That it's a mystery. I seem to recall that the holes were supposedly built years ago as a punishment for criminals, but then modern people feel themselves inexplicably drawn to them, "This hole was made for me," and they fit perfectly into them. They don't push further down the hole, the hole is on a slope so they slide forward. Basically, once they're in, there's no way out - they can't push themselves back and they can't stop, purely because of the shape of the hole. And as the hole gradually changes shape, so do they.
