What spoilers did you read? They didn't die at all. Well technically they didn't die in his timeline... (do you want full spoilers?

Full spoilers? Sure, why not? I've never been spoiler-phobic and anyway I don't plan to catch up on season 7 until it's finished airing. Maybe not until a new showrunner come along (I deal with frustrating shows much better when I'm not watching them in real time).

AYRT and the same anon that just replied to you...

For clarification I was being rather obnoxious in the first reply to you. The Ponds get taken to the past by the Angels and the Doctor is unable to go back for them (for reasons that people will never stop debating over) - so yes he ends up depressed. I also think he's behavior is rather cranky in the Christmas special that follows the Ponds' last episode.

Rory got sent back, and then Amy decided to get sent back herself in order to be with him, so she did sort of *abandon* him, but not really.

Alternative answer, the Doctor's getting way too attached to him companions these days. It's not good for him.

Anon the other anon replied to... my theory is he's starting to really want there to be someone who will can and will travel with him forever instead of coming and going like humans do. He may have been able to deal with it for 1000+ years but it's getting to be too much for him to deal with.
