Irvin Yalom wrote an awesome book about the fear of death. Staring at the Sun. The guy is an American psychiatrist/psychotherapist, and I like him both as a writer and as a professional.

IDK if you're a kind of person seeking help in books, but if yes, I'd totally advise to read it. It is not a "reasonable arguments" sort of thing, rather a "how to live with this shit" one.

How do you imagine this dynamics in canon setting? I mean, it is a super homophobic environment, and they themselves are likely to be absolutely terrified by the very thought of non-platonic relationship.

There are so many things wrong with this (mentor-student situation, age difference, Marty being underage in the beginning (?), same-sex relationship being illegal) that the only reaction I can expect from Doc is to curl up in a very dark corner and die.

Not aggressive, just curious. I've always wanted to encounter a person who ships such a pairing in a "realistic" manner, probably because the only ship present in my fandom is of the same kind, and the only story that exists for it has the couple being happy and all that, which weirds me out to no end, since I know the historical context quite well.

I'd be really curious if everything was really, totally fine before this happened. In my experience, falling into a fandom vortex usually happens when I'm already unhappy or scared. But god do I know how you feel. I thought about asking for help too.

I feel like fandom is largely about wish fulfillment (which is not a bad thing; that was actually a major part of the reason why I entered it in the first place), and, although self-insert is usually less welcome (since it is very personal and normally does not bring pleasure to other fans), I don't think it should be kept secret.

Meh, TV fantasy isn't reality - everyone's got a few fictional characters they'd switch teams for. If it's that hard for you to come out to family, stop stressing it, and wait until you actually start dating someone that makes your "bi-ness" obvious. That way you don't have to have the TV discussion at all - just be like "well, I really like this person and I'm dating them, so I guess I'm bi."

No one is going to chew your head over it unless you think Jurassic Bark wasn't sad...although the amount of people going "OMG saddest thing evur!" and the retcon does make it less sad for me.

Leela's Homeworld always makes me tear up the most.

All big fandoms overanalyze their material. Look at the Harry Potter fandom. You'd think there's a whole philosophy Rowling was writing about a la The Fountainhead.

Although perhaps there should be a golden rule that any fan community should have gushing days or gushing subsections for fun.

Doctor looks very villainous there, though.
