All big fandoms overanalyze their material. Look at the Harry Potter fandom. You'd think there's a whole philosophy Rowling was writing about a la The Fountainhead.

Although perhaps there should be a golden rule that any fan community should have gushing days or gushing subsections for fun.

Doctor looks very villainous there, though.

Anything sci-fi is just begging to be over-analyzed. That's practically half the fun of the genre. Something like Doctor Who, which incorporates both time travel and space travel, along with a whole plethora of scifi technology? Yea, asking the fans not to over-analyze is asking for a miracle that's never going to come. If you can't just come to terms with that, you may want to just back away now to save your sanity.

Because people like to complain and overanalyze fandoms they're invested in. Honestly, it may seem oppressively negative, but widespread explosions of rage and bitching and whining and bashing is usually a sign that the canonical material is really substantive and meaningful and has a lot of things people like and care about. If it didn't, if they didn't care about it, they wouldn't be complaining about the parts that they didn't like, because they wouldn't be able to see any wasted or misused potential or think of any better ideas that the writers should have done.

Also, it's the hiatus. What are they supposed to do, gush pointlessly for four months? When there's such complaint-fodder as THAT facial expression? :D

(I'm curious though: which things were people complaining about the most? I can think of quite a few, but I haven't been keeping up with current fandom, and didn't even bother watching the Christmas special until a few weeks ago.)

This sentence bothers me...

. If it didn't, if they didn't care about it, they wouldn't be complaining about the parts that they didn't like, because they wouldn't be able to see any wasted or misused potential or think of any better ideas that the writers should have done.

I don't like that you seem to think not complaining = not caring about it. Maybe you didn't mean it that literally but still, just because I choose to focus on the the things I LIKED about the show doesn't mean I don't care about it.

Oh, I didn't mean "if you like you, you complain about it", I meant "if you don't like it, you probably won't complain about it" because you're not emotionally invested in it enough to bother complaining about little things.

For some of us, picking things apart is how we enjoy our media.

THIS.

It always bugs me when people say, "stop analyzing and enjoy it!" The two concepts aren't mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Again, this. I'm the person that talks during movies (at home, not cinema) because I have ALL THESE OPINIONS and I need to talk about them. I want to analyze what I'm enjoying. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes, but god willing a car accident will fix everything. Jaejoong can become a Martyr for the cause, and in the public sympathy outpouring from his death, Yunho can admit their love, not only settling the dispute once and for all but making it easier for many people in that country to come out. It'd be for the good of all, you know? And their love would be immortal, untaintable. That's the only reason I want him to die. I AM NOT A BAD PERSON.

The fact that I'm actually considering this as a viable option for the future of YunJae makes me mildly ashamed of myself.

Re: NS

The Ponds ABANDONED HIM! So now he's Mr. Cranky pants.

Re: NS

ayrt

...from the spoilers I've heard, I thought they died or something? Wouldn't he be depressed rather than cranky if that happened?

Re: NS

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What spoilers did you read? They didn't die at all. Well technically they didn't die in his timeline... (do you want full spoilers?

AYRT and the same anon that just replied to you...

For clarification I was being rather obnoxious in the first reply to you. The Ponds get taken to the past by the Angels and the Doctor is unable to go back for them (for reasons that people will never stop debating over) - so yes he ends up depressed. I also think he's behavior is rather cranky in the Christmas special that follows the Ponds' last episode.

I'm assuming this is from the Christmas Special? Wow, he looks emo there. It's like they concentrated all the sulky bitter emo of all the characters from the last season and a half and sculpted it into a facial expression. Could totally give David Tennant's 'standing in the rain looking drop-kicked into complete masochistic numbness' memetic gif a run for its money.

I got five minutes into the XMas Special, and Eleven was so so emo I just went NOPE.

Haven't even felt the barest twinge to watch DW since then, so it's all good. Usually I catch up on the holiday marathons. Never again.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Cranky Doctor is very cranky!

But yeah, I just took a Doctor Who community off my friends list because I was getting tired of the complaints about River about Angels in Manhattan about the 11th Doctor's behavior in episodes and whatever else! The thing is I don't even disagree with half the complaints (or when I do it's not to the same degree) I'm just really fucking tired of hearing it. Whatever I'm focusing on the Classic serials anyway for now just to get some peace.

Classic serials are the greatest for putting all the things people pitch screaming fits over into perspective. It's just a blip in the radar when compared to 30+ seasons :) Not to mention I'm pretty sure that nothing will ever quite match the depressingness of Five's tenure...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
the Classic Serials are so much fun! And every Doctor is awesome in their own ways so far! Granted I've only seen the first three but more soon!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Yep, completely agreed. Classic Who is great for drowning out the annoying that New Who can become. Plus if you add in BF and the novels, the show goes on practically forever, and it's amazing.

And awh, Fivey has his fun and adorable moments too. He does make Ten and Eleven look awfully whiny in comparison, given how comparatively well he deals with all the crap that happens to him which is quite a bit worse than anything that's happened to either of them.

+1

After Three and Four, I found Five to be overall bland, tbqh. But more characters! So that was a bonus over either Three or Four.
