Apart from reasons that have already been mentioned, there's also the unavoidable question of how a woman would physically get her gamete into another woman. Two men at least have a way to physically mimic the act that results in fertilization, even if the unseen lady parts aren't there to make it possible (and because they're hidden, the whole matter is easier to handwave, especially if the author is fuzzy on anatomy to begin with--which I suspect is not that uncommon.) Two women really can't do that without some sort of intrusive technological or magical intervention.
