How do you unlearn what society (how concrete!) has drilled into your head in regard to sex?

I don't mean in terms of quality, but lately I've been feeling like people think GRRM subverts fantasy tropes a lot more than he does. Yeah, there's a lot of rape, murder, incest, etc present in his world, but I don't know, I've never honestly felt surprised that a major character died. It always felt like he was obviously leading up to it, or sacrificed characters whose death made sense.

I only feel there are two characters that are meant for the end game: Dany and Jon. They're the two that get away with the most stuff, have the most disproportionate power building, etc.

It's just that I'm always hearing fans go "OMG GRRM kills ~everyone~ you love!" and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills since it seems so obvious who he was trying to kill. How could I ever be surprised Joffrey died? He had almost no relevance that couldn't be filled by another character. Renly looked like meat the second he declared himself king.

I'll admit I'm surprised by plot turns and whatnot

Do you ever take a step back from your fandom and realize how weird it must look to people who aren't in it?

I love reading discussions about fandoms I'm not in and trying to figure out what's going on in the canons by piecing together bits from those fan discussions, and trying to figure out which canons are really freaking weird and which ones just seem that way to me because of lack of context.

And today it also occured to me that I'm kind of sad I'm already a Homestuck fan, because discussions about Homestuck from the POV of a non-Homestuck are probably the most wonderfully bizarre thing ever.

Seriously. I looked up Catherine (video game) section on there in hopes of fresh fic, since I finished it recently, and was starved for fandom.

There were 5 stories listed. Not bad, I thought.

All crossovers. Avengers, Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Homestuck.

ARGH! I don't have any problem with crossovers but WHERE'S THE ACTUAL FIC FOR THE DAMN GAME?

(Sorry btw if this offends anyone. I'm not trying to say anything about the quality of the fics itself, just exasperation over how...saturated selected fandoms are over there. -_- )

Question. My periods are very irregular, but I've noticed a slight pattern among them. Seems the more painful they are, the shorter they are. The less painful usually lasts a full 7-8 days whereas if I'm puking and curled up in pain and near tears then it can last as short as 2 days. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Stephen King has been behind some amazing movies. The Green Mile has touched a million people who have no idea Stephen King wrote The Green Mile. IT has caused paranoid of clowns in people that have never even seen IT. Look at the filmography of movies based on his work. You'll find a lot more...

Sleepwalkers... will not be on the "best of" lists. Catlike Vampires eat virgins. Maybe it could have been done in a way that works... it wasn't.

Then... Godzilla. Who the hell doesn't love Godzilla? I know I grew up watching one of those movies being shown on cable, and loved them all.

And now... WE ARE GETTING AN UPDATE! WITH A HIGH BUDGET AND GOOD GRAPHICS AND IN ENGLISH THAT ISN'T OVERDUBBED SO NO FISH MOUTH... okay the fish mouth was actually kinda funny, but this is GONNA BE GREAT.

And then it was out. And our "YES YES YES" became "NO NO NO".

Hypothetical question for slash fans...

I was having a weird fandom-related argument with a few friends so I thought I'd pose the question here.

Let's say a slash pairing becomes canon in one of your fandoms. The catch is that it's half of your OTP with a character you either are indifferent to or actively dislike. Are you happy that there's a canon slash pairing at all, or are you pissed that it's not your preferred pairing? Do you think having more canon same sex couples, no matter who they are, is good because it means more representation of gay/bi people in media, or that it doesn't matter because gay/bi characters in fiction don't really mean much in the overall scheme of real life gay rights anyway?

I've come across both opinions and I'm curious to see what people here think.

I don't turn to my TV shows to see The World Writ-Large As I Wish It Was. While I probably would have the passing thought of being glad to see more diversity (in part because I do think fictional media is generally a good temperature for what the majority is willing to accept, and in part because the first shows to really do it will always be the daring ones and that deserves some respect), I think I mostly would be irritated the pairing that had somebody I hated as half of it.

An exception would be if the OTP-half was exploring same-sex sexuality for the first time. I'm not sure why I have that exception, but I do. I think it might because 1) it feeds the fire for stories of the excluded OTP-half learning about this new side of the other OTP half.
