I guess it's always odd to step back and see that most non-fandom people are heterocentric and pretty much find slash/femslash kinda weird.

LOL very much this. And also, the more time you spend in fandom the more desensitized you get to really unusual kinks. I was so embarrassed the other day when I was watching a show with my mom and a character walked past a sex swing and made a passing comment on it, and my mom was like "wtf is that?" and without thinking I answered "sex swing, it's a kink thing"...I don't think she has looked me in the eye since.

I remember watching Queer Eye with my parents, and somebody made a rimming joke. I had to stifle my snigger because I think it flew straight (forgive the pun) over my parents' heads.

More recently, my partner's mom was talking about an article regarding some guy who was into age-play. She was so disapproving and concern-trolling, saying she "felt sorry" for his girlfriend and whatnot, and my partner and I were just like, "Um. It's not hurting anybody, and she could leave if she didn't like it, so...what's the problem here?" At first I was wondering why it was an article in the first place, and then I remembered that the real world doesn't subscribe to YKINMK, and age-play must seem so out there...

And then there was a friend of ours freaking out because she realized she was into bondage and she thought that was so weird and she was so afraid to tell anyone...until my partner pointed out that bondage is fairly tame, as far as kinks go, and that his was considered much weirder, so there was no judgement from us xD

Ah, fandom. It opens your mind...and fills it with crap.

I got into an argument with my mother and sister once because I disagreed that if a guy is willing to have (not even interested in, just willing) his girlfriend peg him that he must be gay or bi.

...do they also believe that lesbians who enjoy penetration with dildos must be straight or bi?

I recognize that it's a common enough assumption outside of kink-friendly areas, but if you think about it for two seconds and flip the scenario, it makes no sense @_@
