Fringe season 5 (SPOILERS AHEAD). It's a big, daring departure in format that never quite succeeds. I don't loathe it as much it as some people, but it's much grimmer in tone and is harder to watch casually/out of sequence (which is RARELY a problem for me-- I'm a huge DS9 fan after all-- but it doesn't work as well as that). For me, the switch to the majority of the storyline being told from Peter's POV rather than Olivia's was a HUGE difference. The Fringe writers stayed true to the themes of their past seasons (emotion having more power than intellect, father/son stories), but most of the fans' favorite subplots were concluded very neatly in season 4. And then everyone could tell how it was going to end: by rewriting time. AGAIN. Which is logical in-universe (and of course Fringe likes to explore alternate universes and alternate timelines), but as viewers it begins to grate when they do it for the third time in three seasons.

Bottom line/TL;DR: Because season 5 was never guaranteed, season 4 was also written as a series finale, and it makes a much more satisfying one.
