Oh, man, science-picking this universe is really fun, though! I once tried to calculate the ridiculous amount of matter that would have to be in the Maelstrom if it really encircled the entire Forgotten Zone, and the answer I came up with (based on estimated flight speeds) was "more matter than is in the entire observable universe" if I remember correctly. Not to mention that, if a Sector is months long from end to end, then even moderate distances should take weeks to fly, and a full loop of a patrol would take years!
But I do love the idea of Guardian Space. Ruling the entire universe like in the comics has always seemed pretty silly from a modern perspective, and putting vague limits on it makes perfect sense to me.
