Not generally a problem unless you/your guy buy a brand you're unfamiliar with that happens to be too large. Then you're going to have worse problems than just mess, though (like the possibility of it slipping off inside your partner). Most guys are okay with buying condoms that actually fit them, unless they're losing their v-card and then shit can seem a bit overwhelming.

Don't try to buy condoms for anyone else. That is the worst possible thing to do.
