Hypothetical question for slash fans...
(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 05:10 am (UTC)(link)Let's say a slash pairing becomes canon in one of your fandoms. The catch is that it's half of your OTP with a character you either are indifferent to or actively dislike. Are you happy that there's a canon slash pairing at all, or are you pissed that it's not your preferred pairing? Do you think having more canon same sex couples, no matter who they are, is good because it means more representation of gay/bi people in media, or that it doesn't matter because gay/bi characters in fiction don't really mean much in the overall scheme of real life gay rights anyway?
I've come across both opinions and I'm curious to see what people here think.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 05:50 am (UTC)(link)An exception would be if the OTP-half was exploring same-sex sexuality for the first time. I'm not sure why I have that exception, but I do. I think it might because 1) it feeds the fire for stories of the excluded OTP-half learning about this new side of the other OTP half.

Re: Hypothetical question for slash fans...
(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)Of course, with most shows, I would actually prefer that my non-OTP be a canon pairing over my OTP. I don't like the risk of writers running a pairing I like into the ground. :)
Re: Hypothetical question for slash fans...
(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)-- if i was indifferent to it? Don't care, be happy it was made canon just for visibility reasons. if I hated the pairings... I guess it depends on why I hate it? If I hate it just cause it doesn't particularly jive with my wishes, i might still be okay with it cause more visibility in the media is an important thing. OTOH, sometimes I hate a pairing because it is so unhealthy (but often not portrayed that way by the fans) In that case I might prefer it being not canon cause a, i don't always trust canons to deal with unhealthy relationships properly, and b, if the only gay pairing in a canon is immediately an unhealthy one that casts some really unfortunate implications.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)might get awkward if my OP is a hetero couple considering they're canon samesex now but I've got the "get out of homo trouble card*"
