Re: I Started Knitting Today!
Other crafts? I sew (nothing super fancy; I mostly make garb for the medieval LARP that I play in), I make chainmaille (though I haven't done much with that lately, as rings are expensive), I dabble in drawing and occasional origami, I bake if that counts... Still haven't been able to work out how crocheting works, though; maybe I just haven't found a good YouTube video? Either that or I need to get hold of an actual person to show me.
Re: I Started Knitting Today!
As a long time crocheter, I was incredibly happy to learn about the foundation chain stitch a few years ago; I wish I'd learned it years ago. Fuck the chain stitch row to start projects! :) (Yeah, that part I always hated. :) I always wanted to directly to the more complicated stitches and this lets you do that. And if you figure out you miscounted the chain stitch you don't have to undo hour(s) of work just to get back to the chain to add or subtract more stitches as long you're still on the first row.) It's still necessary sometimes to do a chain stitch row only, but now I usually use this instead, such a time saver. I strongly suggest learning it. Instead of chaining a whole bunch of single chains, it lets you start making the row from the beginning. I think this is a really good tutorial on it: http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2009/3/tutorial-foundation-single-crochet.aspx
LOL, I also bookmarked the search I'd used for it at the time: https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=Chainless+Foundation
Maybe go here and ask for good tutorial vids? http://www.crochetville.com/community/
I think this woman has some good beginner vids; it does close-ups of her hands and she does it pretty slowly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NelL5hJ1mfQ
I had one really good page of vids bookmarked, but I can't find it now in my delicious and I don't have any more time to look. :(
If you want to trawl through them (I suggest looking under knitting too, just in case, some sites have vids for both subjects and I was probably looking for how to knit vids): https://delicious.com/liblov30/search?p=crochet
