I Started Knitting Today!

[personal profile] straydog733 2013-03-11 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Just got some yarn, some needles, and a book, and I've been sitting in front of my laptop making a wobbly rectangle while half-watching old episodes of Elementary. It's fun, and I think I've gotten the hang of the basic knit, although it took me a lot of watches of a Youtube tutorial. Casting on is a bitch, and I'm not looking forward to casting off.

Any other people here who knit? I also cross stitch, so what's everyone's craft?

I cross-stitch, crochet, and I'd like to like knitting, chainmaille, and how to sew (by hand and by machine--I'd like to be able to tailor/hem my clothes to fit me.). I collected dolls for a while and thought about trying to get into doing that where you can alter them, but I didn't.

I'm kinda envious; I've never, ever been able to knit. :( My fingers just don't coordinate those precise movements and the whole thing falls apart.

Good for you, though. c: It's nice to keep your hands busy like that.

Good for you! I've tried learning how to knit on and off for years, so I'm a bit jealous that you've got the general hang of it. Keep at it! From what my friends tell me, the more you do it the better you get. It'll be a bit of a mess at first but it gets easier with time.

I'll probably try knitting again sometime soon since I tried to learn how to before Youtube tutorials became a common thing. I also want to learn how to sew garments and crochet.

When I was a young girl I wanted to learn how to cross stitch but my mom never taught me. Again, a bit jealous. XD Maybe I'll learn that too sometime in the future.

I also taught myself to knit from YouTube! I found a great website from there that has a lot of great projects: knitpicks.com. Socks are fun (except for the bit at the very end x_x)!

Other crafts? I sew (nothing super fancy; I mostly make garb for the medieval LARP that I play in), I make chainmaille (though I haven't done much with that lately, as rings are expensive), I dabble in drawing and occasional origami, I bake if that counts... Still haven't been able to work out how crocheting works, though; maybe I just haven't found a good YouTube video? Either that or I need to get hold of an actual person to show me.

I think Stitch 'n' Bitch: Happy Hooker is useful in the learning process for crochet.

As a long time crocheter, I was incredibly happy to learn about the foundation chain stitch a few years ago; I wish I'd learned it years ago. Fuck the chain stitch row to start projects! :) (Yeah, that part I always hated. :) I always wanted to directly to the more complicated stitches and this lets you do that. And if you figure out you miscounted the chain stitch you don't have to undo hour(s) of work just to get back to the chain to add or subtract more stitches as long you're still on the first row.) It's still necessary sometimes to do a chain stitch row only, but now I usually use this instead, such a time saver. I strongly suggest learning it. Instead of chaining a whole bunch of single chains, it lets you start making the row from the beginning. I think this is a really good tutorial on it: http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2009/3/tutorial-foundation-single-crochet.aspx

LOL, I also bookmarked the search I'd used for it at the time: https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=Chainless+Foundation

Maybe go here and ask for good tutorial vids? http://www.crochetville.com/community/

I think this woman has some good beginner vids; it does close-ups of her hands and she does it pretty slowly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NelL5hJ1mfQ

I had one really good page of vids bookmarked, but I can't find it now in my delicious and I don't have any more time to look. :(

If you want to trawl through them (I suggest looking under knitting too, just in case, some sites have vids for both subjects and I was probably looking for how to knit vids): https://delicious.com/liblov30/search?p=crochet

Thanks! I'll bookmark this thread so that when I have some time, I can give some of these tutorials a try. ^_^
