Seriously. I looked up Catherine (video game) section on there in hopes of fresh fic, since I finished it recently, and was starved for fandom.

There were 5 stories listed. Not bad, I thought.

All crossovers. Avengers, Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Homestuck.

ARGH! I don't have any problem with crossovers but WHERE'S THE ACTUAL FIC FOR THE DAMN GAME?

(Sorry btw if this offends anyone. I'm not trying to say anything about the quality of the fics itself, just exasperation over how...saturated selected fandoms are over there. -_- )

I feel your pain, though! Once I went to take a look at the Kidnapped tag (quite hopeless, I know), and there was one story, and I was happy beforehand, and

it was a DW crossover

I read it out of sheer despair. It was good, btw. I liked Alan's characterization. But I'm afraid it still made me very sad.

I feel your pain. AO3's search system is shit. Want to read fic about a specific character? Enjoy spending the next few hours going through every single fic where that character is tagged just to find something where they are the actual focus of the story.

Yeah, you start to miss the system on FF.net where you can only search by two characters at a time.

Seconding this. It's especially troublesome when the character you're searching for fic for doesn't get much fic focused on them in the first place.

YES! Especially in a large fandom where they tag everyone who is ever mentioned in the story. Sometimes I want to read side characters!

Ugh, this. I've been reading SWTOR fic lately and there's LITERALLY like, three tags for Female Sith Warrior/Malavai Quinn. And not all the stories for that pair is listed under them. Drives me nuts...

I've run into that problem with other fandoms as well, like Star Trek.

I'm kind of puzzled by the huge amount of crossovers on AO3. On every other fanfiction site it seems like x-overs are really rare and nobody reads them, but when you go to AO3, it sometimes seems impossible to find any fic that stays within one fandom. WTF?

From my experience, AO3 is the place where you go to find slash fic of the big internet fandoms, like Harry Potter or Hetalia or Sherlock or Inception or the Avengers. The Pit's the place for everything else, so you might have better luck there.

That said... I've found that what they say about quality generally (though not always) runs true. And the Pit won't let me post porn, so my sole fic for an ulta-obscure video game fandom (FEAR, and it isn't even slash!) had to be posted there rather than the Pit. And hey I've gotten a few kudos, so some FEAR fans must go there.

This doesn't sound like a problem with Ao3, but with your shitty fandom that can't sustain itself without crossbreeding.

I was agreeing until you had to go and insult the OP's fandom :/ There's nothing shitty about small fandoms, and it does suck that the larger fandoms bleed into everything else, but yeah, the problem isn't really with AO3, but with the way fandoms are as a whole.

Yes, that is you being too sensitive. It's a valid term for a valid comparison. Saying some fic crossbreeds Keen Eddie with Life on Mars is no different than saying some guy crossbreeds beagles with basset hounds.

Which one's that? Avengers, Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, or Homestuck?

Maybe, just maybe, the problem could have a solution: AO3 giving us the choice of omitting crossovers from the search results.

Not finding anything can be better than only finding crossovers.

I'm still really fucking pissed the turned the tag list into top ten rather than full tag lists. Most of the stuff I search for aren't stuff tumblr cums over

Go to a fandom, eliminate the "/works" part of the link and voilà, you can see all the tags related to that fandom instead of the top 10.

Perfect solution? Not at all, but right now it's the only option :/

I'd rather have ten tags than no tags, because that places just sucked balls when the tagging system was down. :/

I love AO3, but no Gus/Max fanfic (Breaking Bad)???? REALLY?!

Oh god I feel you. Right now I'm not in a small fandom but that fandom gets hijacked by Sherlock fandom quite often. I don't want to read a fusion with Sherlock characters! I'd love if there was a way to not see this fics (like on ff.net where crossovers and fusions are in their own cathegories).

AO3 needs a 'not' function on the search. Fandom X NOT crossover. Character Y NOT pairing Y/Z. Femslash NOT Slash with an incidental mention of how canon love interest is dating a girl now to keep her away from your OTP.
