No it's usually about trying to pretend they like female characters for 1 month out of the year.

I really doubt every voter is ~pretending~ to like all the female characters that got selected.
Of course, I guess there's some people who do that in some case and there's also strategic voting going on (taking Community as an exemple, a lot people won't vote for Troy even if he's their favorite because he already won the FMM. Instead, they'll focus on their second favorite or whoever they want to win)

Some people love and promote female characters all year long. It just depends of where you hang out.
