I personally don't think it's interesting enough to hate it. It's just a bit of fluff really. Hats off to those that participate and enjoy it. It's harmless.

I followed it a bit last year. Some of it was hilarious, and there were some amazing gifs and really clever campaigns. But a lot of it just got really unkind. I love the competitive stanning side, but I don't understand how anyone can enjoy actively trying to make other people angry like that.

Basically, characters from various fandoms are paired up against each other, and fans vote for who they want to win. The rounds keep going until there's only one winner left. Last year, Leslie Knopes won.

Like most things, it's a mix of good and bad things. Sometimes people can be awful in their treatment of other fans (not to mention other characters) but there are times when people can be awesome, as well. And Leslie Knope won last year so it can't be all bad :)

I wouldn't say I hate it, but I stopped seeing the fun in it when I found out it's more about which characters have the hardest campaigners than which ones are actually the most loved.

My biggest problems with it are that a) it thinks it's more important than it is and b) nobody thinks things through or plays to the largest base.

For example: It looks like Natasha Romanoff is winning the character nomination for the Avengers, and this will ultimately lead to The Avengers dropping out of the running early on because her fanbase isn't large enough. They would have had better luck with Tony Stark or Loki, because they have more fans who are more likely to campaign. This is something that seems pretty obvious to me, so it annoys me when people don't make choices based on their better chance of winning. :/

I think the poll can be fun, but there are people who take it too seriously. I usually just vote and occasionally look at the gifs.

I hate it this year. I'm familiar with less than 30 percent of what made the bracket (and a not insignificant portion of that number are characters from shows I don't watch but am aware enough of to recognize the names).

Also, the Blood and Chrome loophole for getting BSG characters past the "Must have been current in 2011" rule is bullshit.

I don't get this at all, is this supposed to measure some kind of character popularity? Because I'm 100% sure that Jo Harvelle is NOT the most popular character on Supernatural.

It is a bunch of crap that is way more about bashing people you don't like then actually celebrating good characters. Luckily it's usually easy enough to ignore.

So unless you have an flist full of crazy ass fans it shouldn't be a big deal.

I still semi-enjoy it, but people were SUCH assholes last year; it really took a lot of the fun out. As such, I refuse to vote for John Watson (or Joan Watson) or Sansa or Mary Crawley this year. YOU ARE ALL STILL IN TIME-OUT

I don't hate March Madness because it's relatively easy to ignore for the most part. I hate the people who decide that they can spam any and all communities to vote for their characters. Those people are terrible.

I generally ignore it. I didn't know about it until the year before last, and I got curious because it's all "vote for your favourites" so you'd think it was about gushing about favourite characters. But, ah, no. It's not even really about characters at all. It's about:

- size of fandoms going against each other (biggest voting pool)
- ferocity of fandoms going against each other (most psycho voters)
- bashing characters against yours (which is inherent in competition, I suppose)
- voter politics (vote for character because to do otherwise makes you a horrible person who is racist/sexist/speciesist/wrong political/whatever)

All of which I get enough of in real life without giving over fandom time I could be using to actually gush about my favourites.

If you like popularity contests and the element of competition is fun for you, have at it. I'm just ... too tired for that shit these days, really.

And god, now I sound old and bitter. When did that happen?

I'm really pissed off about it this year, petty as it may be. The last time I actively participated(2010? 2011?), it was a funfest where people campaigned for their favorites and the legitimately most popular character went on to represent their shows. Like, last time I did this, Dean and Cas were in hot competition to win SPN, and the only one remotely near them was Sam. You know, the characters SPN fandom ACTUALLY cares about? I don't recall any character bashing. I've dropped back into fandom now and I poked my head into FMM, and, idk. At first I was thrilled to see so many people loving on the ladies, but I got more and more irritated the more character bashing I saw to support their rise to the top. FMM just isn't fun when it's about trying to elevate some SJW-approved character fandom has been ignoring. It should be a celebration of characters people are genuinely passionate about all year round.
