I don't know. The Northern Californian accent sounds different to me than the Southern Californian accent. And the San Francisco accent sticks out like a sore thumb no matter where it goes.

Yeah, but north/south CA is like, 600 miles difference.

I grew up in Northern California and there was a large variety of accents just at my high school. There were valley girl accents, surfer accents, AAV accents, Filipino accents some other accents that are distinct enough that I can mimic them, but not name them. I think it's pretty interesting that people who live so close to each other can have different accents, but I don't think that's unique to any one part of the world.

I find that fascinating, because I'm relatively certain I can pinpoint almost anywhere in California someone's from and I've never left South Carolina. Accents are so interesting!

I've found that the various American accents are just as evenly spread, but have a more general taper into the next on average and are therefore "generalized" because of the relatively massive size of the nation.

Personally, I can differentiate what local county someone is from based on their accent and I can pin someone down to their township in my own county and neighbourhood in my own town. (It is a really pretty small town but its surrounding areas that people define AS being in town are pretty large). Of course, I had a massive need to be a linguist for much of my teenage life and started turning into Henry Higgens...

You can tell people's NEIGHBORHOOD from their accent? Daaang, that's some mad skills there.

I tend to be pretty bad at picking out accents that aren't common in places where I've lived (and even some that are), so I really think it's cool when people can distinguish lots of different accents beyond the broad categories like American/British/French/etc.

...Sorry if this is rude, but I'm curious. If I link you a video of me talking, would you try to guess where I'm from? I mean, I already told you Northern California, but you kind of implied you could recognize stricter categories than that, so I'm just wondering how distinct my accent is. But it's fine if you don't want to, of course.;;

Yeah! I find their accents pretty striking though they're highly similar! That's like the one time I went like five minutes into North Carolina (So, like, a 45 minute drive away), we got an electric organ from some people and later stopped at a service station and their accents felt wildly different because I wasn't used to talking to people with their areas accents.

Hahaha, we can definitely try! I will probably CRASH AND BURN because of HUBRISSS! I've never had my suspicions actively confirmed or busted about my Californian accuracy so I apologize if I get it completely wrong!

That's really cool. I never would've guessed a regional accent would differ so much in such a short distance.

Well, here's a video of me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdD61jHfTeQ&list=UUXr4-e8qU0vp3o7BthLtpXQ&index=1 Ignore how stupid I sound, I did that for an internet acquaintance who told me she needed someone to make a video about America for her within the next hour. 'xD

And hah, it's cool if you get it wrong. 'xD Especially since, like I said, there's lots of different accents where I'm from. I'm just curious what you think.

I am actually really, really uncertain, but *Checks map* I want to say that you're from somewhere around the corner between Shasta, Siskiyou, Modoc and Lassen counties. I am really interested in where you're from now because it was kind of hard to make a guess, haha

Not quite. I'm actually from Contra Costa County in the Bay Area. My hometown is one of those places where everyone comes from somewhere else, which may be why it's hard to tell. Maybe in a few generations the accents will be more similar or something. May I ask what made you guess what you did?

Can I test your Californian skills too? I have a couple samples from past f!s accent discussions:

+1. If you live in San Diego and have family in Oakland, it's equivalent to you living in Georgia and your family living in northern Virginia/southern Maryland.
