No one is going to chew your head over it unless you think Jurassic Bark wasn't sad...although the amount of people going "OMG saddest thing evur!" and the retcon does make it less sad for me.

Leela's Homeworld always makes me tear up the most.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, Leela's Homeworld! The Luck of the Fryrish as well, the ending always leaves me in tears.

The show is extremely popular and there are more people gushing than there are people criticising. So why not just avoid the critics? You're in the majority, after all. I don't see the problem.

Signed, someone who is bored by the RTD vs Moffat wank because she's more into Classic Who.

I think "And Maggie Makes Three" trumps both of them in the moving department, so *shrugs*. To each their own.

Is that the "Do it for her" episode? Daaamn, Matt Groening sure knows how to pack a punch.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is kind of irrelevant, but actually Matt Groening rarely had a hand in the writing of the episodes. These lovely moments were mostly thanks to the very talented writing staff before quite a few of the writers were replaced.

I still hate that episode, but the first movie sort of implies he didn't die alone. (Sort of a plothole, but whatever)

On the subject of Futurama, though, god do I hate the second movie. Fry was so OOC in it, it frustrated me .

They're extremely different scenes, aren't they. When Seymour dies, you just want to crawl up into a ball and cry because something so sad has happened in the world. When Bleeding Gums comes back, you feel the joy of knowing someone you've loved is never really gone.

Even though Jurassic Bark still makes me really sad, a part of me kind of hated the retcon. I don't know, yeah it's nice Seymour didn't have to wait for Fry to come back and die alone but it also cheapened the emotional impact of Jurassic Bark for me. I guess I must be in a minority sort of wondering if it had been better leaving things how they were because apparently the retcon was a reaction to fans chewing the writers out over how much Seymour's arc upset them. At least, I vaguely I remember reading that explanation once.

Anyway OP, it's fine if you think one was more moving than the other.

I wasn't aware there was a competition.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have dogs you loved like family members? that seems to be what does it

(same with the one with fry's brother; if you have siblings it increases the chance of it hitting a nerve)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And for me, the episode about Fry's brother had me openly sobbing and your two examples I just found kinda sad

They're both emotionally powerful scenes, but two very different emotions. I don't think they're very comparable.

And both scenes have excellent music.

Image The dog dying makes me sad because its based on a true story. They adapted it into a film recently with Richard Gere and god, I've never cried as much as I did with the ending of this film.

They adapted it into a film recently with Richard Gere

lol

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
...I hope you meant "they adapted it into a film" as a bit of a joke.

But anyway, OMG my best friend and I were watching "Hachi" at his place and I was crying so hard at the end of the film.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Jurassic Bark feels carefully and precisely contrived to dig out and tug at every last heartstring.

Yeah, I wasn't buying it either.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
None of these (plus "And Maggie Makes Three") had made me sad... However "Mother Simpson"'s last scene made me sad enough to cry when the scene of Homer watching the stars comes up (don't get me started with the music ;_;).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
wtf is even wrong with you for making feelings into some kind of competition. jesus, some people's minds.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think that all the differing emotional response were based on each individual's experience. i.e. Jurassic Bark resonated with dog/pet/animal lovers, and Luck of the Fryish appealed to viewers who've bittersweet relationships with their siblings. Moaning Lisa and Lisa's Substitute hit close to home for me for that reason.
