Shows/Movies That Were Not What You Expected

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-03-11 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I finally saw Rise of the Guardians yesterday. I had previously only seen stills and GIFs of it on Tumblr. I was...not expecting that voice for Jack Frost. He is so young looking then he has Chris Pine's adult voice. It was a bit weird and disconcerting.

I had a similar reaction the first time I saw a clip of Elementary. Johnny Lee Miller's voice was very different from what I was expecting from GIFs and it has lowered my interest in watching the show.

Or how Teen Wolf is not actually the Stiles and Derek show (I could only watch like 5 episodes of that mess).

So, give me some shows/movies you have only been exposed through in fandom that when you watched it made you go "No, ಠ_ಠ"

Oh, yeah, I totally agree about RoG, and I'm not going to even bother watching Teen Wolf.

I tried to watch the new Doctor Who, but the first episode was this dumb shit involving mannequins. I couldn't continue watching.

I wish I had stopped there tbh.

I don't get why people ever start with the pilot episodes of shows if they have the option to start with a later episode. Pilots are always so crappy and such a poor indicator of what the show is like. Without exception. Every single pilot episode either sucks or is misleading or has a weird tone or all three. Ick.

IDK, man. Sherlock, SPN, and Doctor Who are considered the ~Big Three~ of tumblr, and I thought SPN and Sherlock had good pilots. (Well, Sherlock had to have a pilot since it was so long, but still).

Teen Wolf was nowhere what Tumblr makes it out to be. I was so confused as I watched more and more episodes, waiting for all this "Sterek" and seeing characters that were acting nothing like Tumblr made them out to be. I think the confusion and disparity between the actual show and fandom is probably what kept me watching in fascination for so long.

Re: Shows/Movies That Were Not What You Expected

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Sterek is totally not as much in the show as it is online.

I really have grown to like the show, but the fandom is a bit ridiculous, especially the Sterek meta people out.

I started watching it because I had heard that it had some very slashable things but I didn't know any details. After watching a bit, I thought that yeah, I guess I could kind of ship Stiles/Scott. I think the look on my face when I realized that was not the pairing everybody was going on about must have been quite amusing.

Yeah. Teen Wolf + Tumblr was kind of the deciding factor in my choice to always disregard tumblrs perspective about anything ever for all time.

Hmm...the only ones I can think of are "Yes!" rather than "No." Maybe the Big Bang Theory? I'm still like :| about that one, but I've only seen about 2 episodes.

I honestly thought that Supernatural was going to be pop culture heavy but mundane, fluffy fantasy show like Charmed. Especially with the way fandom was going on how dreamy Castiel and Misha were.

Then I caught a couple of episodes and thought, "Christ, this kind of spooky." Then I started from the first season and saw how the show was about urban legends which I have loved since I was a wee tot as well as how the show was actually a horror show with some comedic/drama elements like in the vein of An American Werewolf in London or like my favorite episodes of X-Files. After that, I ended up kicking myself for not watching the show sooner.

haha I was going to mention Supernatural too, but I thought OP wanted shows that turned out to suck compared what you expected.

I'm just in the beginning of SPN, and this is ridiculously fun and I didn't expect to like it. so far

Ooh, comparing Show to AWiL - that's neat! And pretty accurate, too. :)

John Carter. I went to the theater expecting to see a sort-of Conan the Barbarian in space testosterone-fest, but ended up with a world-hopping adventure with interesting characters, a decent plot and good effects. It was a really good movie, not the best ever, but good.

I will never understand the hate it gets. Scorn for the poor marketing and advertising that lead to it's flop, sure, but the movie itself doesn't deserve the hate it's gotten.

It's one of those movie industry things where studio politics screwed it over. Essentially, there was a change at the top of some kind at the studio that it was putting it out, and it was in the interest of the people at the top that the movie not do well, because it wasn't their project, it was the project of the guy who came before them. So it was essentially self-sabotage.

I thought Revolution was going to be about a woman traveling around having adventures while looking for her brother. And while there is a bit of that, there was a lot about it I wasn't expecting, most of which I didn't really like (i.e., the eeeeeeevil colonial government stuff).

[personal profile] shortysc22 2013-03-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Revolution was going to be a lot more of how the power got turned off and how the population was coping. The show definitely lost itself.

I could make a long list as to why people shouldn't hype things for me, it just never goes well if I expect too much.

Avatar is a big one, everyone was raving about it and I hated, HATED that movie (I know haters came around but when I saw it I was only hearing good things.) And the art was beautiful but it also had a lot of issues in certain places (creature design was off and for the love of god don't make every fucking thing glow.)

Fandom made me think Pitch Perfect would be funny or entertaining somehow, it wasn't.

Seeing a gif set made me see Bachelorette, it was horrid, the movie should have been called "why your friends are horrible people and you never should have let them in your wedding."

Oh and Silver Linings Playbook, nope. I think Jennifer Lawrence is okay but- no, just no.

Oh man, when I went to watch The Revenger's Tragedy for my Elizabethan Tragedy class, I thought it was going to be like the Ralph Fiennes Coriolanus: modern-dress and grim.

I was NOT expecting it to be a over-the-top, campy dystopian sci-fi epic, set in Liverpool with a score by Chumbawamba. I hadn't read the play yet, so I didn't know just how funny the text really is. Sure, Alex Cox adds some surprising and creative visuals, but 95% of the insanity is RIGHT THERE in the original. The Duke's death by poisoned skull? The sons all stabbing each other one after the other to succeed him? The death-warrant switcheroo?! Such a great play, and a great movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it's good and funny and weird. Alex Cox directed it. He made Repo Man, you know.

(I haven't actually seen The Revenger's Tragedy but I'll definitely check it out!)

This has happened plenty of times. I see people hyping a show or a movie with gif sets and then it turns out that they are completely taken out of context. Once Upon a Time would be the latest offender. The fandom made it look far more exiting than it actually was, and watching three episodes made me give up in boredom.

Does the general youtube voice acting community count? Because every time I hear an adult dude deeply voicing a kid, it throws me out just like with Rise of the Guardians. Except at least with RotG I got used to it.

Glee. Beyond the song covers, I have no idea what people see in that terrible mess or its cast of terrible people.

Downton Abbey. Nope.

Smallville. Extra Nope.

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Uuuuugggh I can't even explain my dislike, but for irrational reasons this show pisses me off and I don't know why it just does.

SAM-FUCKIN'-SARA.

Not fandom, but reviews and stuff. I went with my Mum and grandmother because it was meant to be a 'visual meditation' and show 'the beauty of the world'.

I walked out when they started showing footage of animals being slaughtered. Oh my fucking god WHAT.
